I sure wish there was a Kitty Obedience School. I could take Isis to it and
after she passed I could say:

sit!
jump!
lap!
dinner time!
don't go in the room and scratch the couch!
sleep now!
come here!

Wouldn't it be great?

*grin*  Well, there's no Kitty Obedience School, but most cats
enjoy clicker training.  My boys have ~20 behaviours -- basic
obedience (sit, down, come, stay, etc), stupid tricks (speak, wave,
high-five, etc), and agility-related behaviours (jump over, jump
through, tunnel, etc).  And they love it!  The clicker game is their
favorite game of all time.

No kidding? That sounds interesting! How does it work and HOW did you manage
to train them??

Thanks!

Clicker training uses classical operant conditioning, with the
clicker acting as the bridge between desired behaviour and reward.  In
other words, you teach the cat that the click equals a treat (by
clicking and treating 5 times or so) and then you use the click to
capture behaviours.  The cat learns that s/he can elict the click by
performing behaviours.  Once a cat is consistently throwing the
behaviour at you to get the click, you can add in the voice and/or
hand command, and then you have a behaviour on cue.
There is a very good site on clicker training for cats at
http://clickertraining.com/training/cats/index.htm?loaditem=cats&salesitem=cats_s

As for how to manage to train them, they love it.  Training is
great mental stimulation and there are yummy treats involved -- what
could be more fun?  Just remember to keep it fun for all parties
involved.

*grin*  Actually, yes he does.  He's very smart.  Too smart,
usually.  :)  But he is a Bengal, so it's to be expected.
