Tiger still has lose stool and all the vet wants to do is push the
prescription food that she sells. We try and feed our girls the best foods
that we can get( Natural Balance, Eagle Pack, Nutrience & Royal Canin). Does
the Vet have the right to push the prescription food saying that it's the
best food for lose stool.

What is causing the loose stool? How long has it been going on? We've
had luck with cantaloupe and yogurt for diarrhea in the past.

It is been going on for about a week now, we have tryed yogurt, and it looks
like it might be starting to work, Vet already tested for parasites, and she
said that it is negative.  She said for us not to give Tiger yogurt and put
her on prescription food instead.  Vet said the bacteria in yogurt is no
good for Diarrhea.  What should I do?

We've always had good luck with yogurt.

Also, if the cat is active and acting normally, I wouldn't worry much.
Do you know how to check for dehydration?

Not all yoghurt will work.  It must be LIVE CULTURE yoghurt.  This was
recommended by my vet a few years ago.  You can also use acidolphulos
powder.  Get the capsules at a health food store.  Open the capsules and
mix some of the powder in canned food.  It sounds like your vet wants to
sell prescription food!

I wouldn't worry much then. The other poster is right, look for yogurt
with live acidophilus.

When you lift their skin it stays up if dehydrated and falls back if not

I use a butt-plug for my cats when they have loose stool. I also feed
them about five grams of marajuana baked into a tuna brownie it stops
the diarrea every time.

One of two things you can try:

Lactobicilus Acedophelus (sp?) - you can get it at GNC or health food store.
Break open capsule and sprinkle a little (1/8 capsule - dosing is not exact)
on food - my cats eat it w/no problem.  It's supposed to promote the *good*
bacteria in their intestines.

Or I've heard strained pumpkin works on both diarrhea and constipation (have
not tried it yet).  And supposedly cats love it.

I had to get pumpkin into my RB cat Marley when he had megacolon and
couldn't poop. Since Marley and Shadow would switch bowls, I had to give it
to both of them. The only way I could get them to eat it was to put the
pumpkin under the canned food for a few minutes so the "gravy" would mix
with the pumpkin and smell like cat food. Sad to say it didn't work for
long because Marley got so bad he couldn't poop, or eat. Poor boy.

prescription food makes them healthier when it's time to stew them.

If she has diarrhea and has been checked for parasites and is clear of
them. She could have a bacterial infection that will cause diarrhea. My
male cat had diarrhea for a few days. Turns out he had a bacterial
infection. My vet put him on an antibacterial agent - Metronidazole
which is also called Flaqyl. In about three days the diarrhea stopped.
You might ask your vet about this. Good luck.

Tiger was on Metronidazole for 7 days but the diarrhea still hasen't
stopped.  We are going to try giving her yoghurt with live acidophilus, and
hopefully that works.  Any other advise would be great.
Thank you all.

The yogurt might help. I forgot to mention a few other things last night:

1. keep her water and food bowls clean - washing them daily.
2. Keep her litterbox super clean, and change the litter more often saw
a couple of times a week .She could be reinfecting herself from the
bacteria in the box.
3. Cut down the amount she is eating preferably only feeding her dry
food and plenty of water.

When my male cat had diarrhea I did these things in addition to the
Metronidazole and it seemed to help.

Another thing to consider if the yogurt doesn't help: You can buy a
product at pet food stores called Bene-bac that contains beneficial
bacteria that can help. Also you might consider feeding her Nutro
complete care as it contains probiotics - the cultures in yogurt - it
might help as well.

does the vet have the right to push it?  yes.  is it the right thing for
your cat, we can't know.  You cat might have food allergies, and thus a
prescription brand diet of specialized protein - something you cat isn't
likely to have eaten in the past and thus not be allergic to - would help.
or it might have issues digesting complex proteins, and ID is a specialized
diet that is easily digestible.

its hard to say what is best for your cat.  However it sounds like this
particular vet isn't very helpful in this department either.  It might be in
your and the kitty's best interest to get a second opinion.

Good luck

and btw.. ive had great luck with both full fat active yogurt and pumpkin..
my fosters always dig right into both and more often than not it helps clear
things up faster than just meds alone.

Are you retarded? If that is the case I guess drug-dealers have the
right to push cocaine to your kids then right? Vets have the right to
push that crap right up their a.s as far as I am concerned, You should
know better than that Connie! I am highly dissapointed in you. mari
