A Home for Hobo?

Mmhsb - 08 Apr 2004 20:14 GMT Actually joined this newsgroup for the subject matter ---- A Home for Hobo? Who you say? Hobo the valiant homeless abandoned Tommy that I've been feeding ... for yrs. Built him a deluxe well insulated dog house -- for Hobo the Cat. Am moving soon and MUST relocate Hobo. He's 4yrs. old all black a brave boy though rejected by my 3 indoor 7 yr. old females (spayed at 6 mnths old & territorial). I've been trying for yrs. to find a home for Hobo. He's a talker who chirps away at feeding time. He loves to sit on my lap and be groomed -- so he can be reformed and become a house/farm cat. He's managed to stay alive in the mean streets for 4 yrs. now and deserves a home, really he just needs to be fed and provided with a home/farm. I will pay to have him neutered... and deliver him with his dog house to the right person in south-central-east Ontario, Canada. He's lovable protective & the sweetest little buuger with the strongest will to live and be happy. Please help find a home for HOBO? Any help appreciated!!

Hobo the valiant homeless abandoned Tommy that I've been [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > sweetest little buuger with the strongest will to live and be happy. Please > help find a home for HOBO? Any help appreciated!! You've been feeding this cat for 4 years and still haven't had him neutered? And how many kittens has he fathered in that time? That's not a responsible way to manage a feral cat, much less a cat that allows you to groom him and be a lap cat.. I'm assuming you didn't give him any shots either, right? It's a wonder this cat IS still around.
In fact, not being neutered may be the reason your girls rejected him so quickly. All cats are territorial to a certain degree, but especially when it comes to an unneutered tom. Have him fixed and bring him indoors to live and move with him. It's the right thing to do. It is most unlikely that you are going to find this animal a home except from someone who'll not care enough to really take care of him or from someone who wants to use him for bait for dog fighting or lab research. Suck it up and really become responsible. Many of us live in multi cat households where everyone doesn't get along. It can be managed just fine.
Mmhsb - 09 Apr 2004 05:18 GMT Can I bring every feral & abandoned cat I've fed for 12 yrs. into the home? I've reunited lost cats & owners, found homes/farms for many homeless cats & have made it possible for other homeless cats to LIVE! I've de-wormed, hairball, groomed, fed & begged the local SPCA & Pounds to help rescue injured cats to no avail. They say when you feed them you own them - so they do nothing - and I do! I didn't get HOBO fixed because a sad fact regarding 'homeless cats' - only the fittest survive in the 'law of the jungle'. Perhaps he fathered kittens - but with whom? To begin cats by bi-law can't wander outdoors, so obviously no "responsible" cat owner would let a she cat wonder about ---- and not fixed/spayed? ---- come now a "responsible" person would not allow that. So perhaps a desolate abandoned she cat was tossed outside to die by her irresponsible cat owners (killers)-- then my valiant cat saving boy Hobo leads her to food & perhaps feel love in their lives. I have done everything possible for the best of cats & those who do nothing yet complain & accuse. I had 4 cats & lost one who was poisoned after reporting a cat-killing couple & they got off the hook again!!! But I've had my three sister cats, since birth and almost 8. I rescued them too along with their poisoned cousin from a gruesome cat breeding farm. But all the poor rescued cats were just killed and out of 53 cats the only live ones are the ones I took (4 babies) and the rest they claimed were feral or diseased or dangerous so the Town killed them anyway in the cat killing Shelter. And all the "responsible" Town people paid for their deaths with their tax dollars. How noble the responsible ones are as they proudly & ignorantly look the other way. But what you don't know is I've been grossly ill for over 5 yrs. when nearly killed as an accident victim. And very poor as a disabled way below poverty line lady & go without to care for my furry friends. Now facing major surgery I go to live with Mom who believes animals belong on farms not in the house. But since its me & my girls or not at all she's graciously agreed but to Hobo she says no way & I can't dissuade her. Also it was not even my choice or I would have taken HOBO inside to start (instead of a dog house & 3 meals a day & love) BUT I don't live alone you see and was prevented as I needed help with my 4 now 3 cats. ANYWAY a long story to end ---- I still need a Hero to Responsibly care for my little Superman - Hobo the lovable cat!!! P.S. I offered all along to pay the Vet ... if only a kind cat person will give him a good HOME and rehabilitate him.
> > Actually joined this newsgroup for the subject matter ---- A Home for > Hobo? [quoted text clipped - 33 lines] > responsible. Sunflower - 09 Apr 2004 13:52 GMT Feeding homeless animals is NOT rescuing them unless you prevent them from becoming ill by giving them vaccines and you spay or neuter them to prevent them from adding to the number that need to be rescued. Feeding them without that goal in mind just ADDS to the homeless pet population. It's a disservice to the animals. Managing any feral colony involves getting the animals spayed or neutered. There are many programs out there to help you with this. OUrs charges $30 to anyone who has a cat that needs to be fixed. For anyone on government assistance, the fee is $10. SHots are only another $15. How cheap do you want it to be before you'll spend the money? I myself manage a feral colony with trap, neuter, shots, and release. I'm not made of money either. I've had 3 surgeries in 4 months time here recently and you don't even want to know how much my medical bills are. But, I am not adding to the surplus pet population if I can help it. Surplus cats die in all kinds of horrible ways, including humane euthanasia at a shelter because they are so overcrowded with the offspring of unneutered and unspayed cats. It ALWAYS takes two to produce kittens, and it's just as irresponsible to allow a tom to roam unaltered as it is a queen.
But, this cat was NOT feral, just homeless. Any local shelter would be willing to help rehome a loving lap cat found roaming outside. Ours does it all the time. You had 4 years to actually help this cat, and all you did was make him dependent on your handouts and now you want someone else to assume the responsibility. Feeding this animal for that length of time IS a contract with him. Follow through on it, or take him to a shelter where he has a chance at adoption, or at least will be humanely euthanized. Being hit by a car as he searches for his next source of handouts is not humane. Dying of feline aids or leukemia that he caught because he was unaltered and fought with other tomcats is not humane. Complete your commitment to this boy. Fix him and take him with you.
kilikini - 09 Apr 2004 15:04 GMT It's threads like this that really bother me. I wish people would get off their high horse! MMhsb was trying to do good by feeding Hobo. Simple as that. She can't stand to see a poor thing starve. Just because you feed something does NOT mean that you own it and are solely responsible for it. The fact that she paid for food for this poor cat for years says enough. The thing was LUCKY.
We have feral cat colonies all over this island. There are people assigned to each colony who take their own hard earned money and feed and water these colonies daily. The thought process is at least if they're fed they might be able to fight off diseases and also they won't be such a nuisance. Who wants to see some skinny cat wandering around whining, with a terrible upper respiratory infection, in search of food in your backyard?
There is a trapping program also. If the colonly caregiver can trap a cat, it's taken to a participating vet who will tattoo, give shots, and fix the animal. It is then released back into it's colony.
We have over 80,000 feral cats on this island. We're doing the best we can. Mmhsb is doing the best that she can.

If one of us at works, finds a ferel or a colony of them, we'll do what we can to try to care for them.
Recently we had this black cat show up at work for a few days. She seemed friendly, but shy. We fed her for a few days then we were able to trap her with the intent that if she was ferel we would get her up to dat with vet care and get her fixed, then release her again at the office and if she chose to stay yere, we'd continue to feed her.
Turns out she wasn't a ferel, but was actually tame. Either dumped out here or got lost from one of the homes in the local area. (note, this is also how I got my dog, Chloe, last year). So, my coworkers wife took in the cat, got her up to date w/ vet stuff, spayed and they are looking to rehome her. She's a very sweet and wonderful cat.
Oh, but the sad thing is, she has feline aids. :-( But they do know of a group that will take her in and care for her, so she will be cared for.

Mmhsb - 09 Apr 2004 20:03 GMT Thanks Kilikini - your points are well made & much appreciated. Sunflower obviously does not live in Canada. I will ck. the net AGAIN for the services he says are available but as to prev. research I found there are many US programs to spay/neuter... free or cheap. In Ontario it runs $225.00+ for shots & spay/neuter. Yes I would gladly pay if I had a home for Hobo. Not that I have the $ but I'd get it. The problem is my community has ZERO tolerance for wandering cats, we have no feral communities, we don't have programs in place... If any of you live in small towns & farming communities in Canada - you'd know the only services are the Shelters, which have a 3-5 day holding policy -- then it's death to all cats. I would never take Hobo or any cat to the Shelter. Adoption there? They make no effort - the shelters are paid to kill not to save. That's why I've fed wandering & homeless cats & personally (newspaper adds) returned lost cats --- but for my own feeding stations --- these cats would likely be dead of horrible starvation & freezing through the frigid winters here. I stand behind FEEDING all cats in need, providing makeshift shelters out of the snow & COLD and trying to give then homes. Unfortunately as Kilikni points out & I say we can't provide a home for every cat we feed, but for sure food to hungry homeless animals gives them a life whereas death is the alternative. I did rescue Hobo who was a tiny half starved dejected tossed out cat who came to my door smelling other cats & food. I went all around to find his owner & to get him adopted to no avail! No one would help! The local shelter dares not trap him or lay any traps in my area as I've already had them investigated ($ hungry animal killing independent operation) the result ---- Town changed bi-law, cats get 5 days instead of 3 days of life!!! (Counting the day of capture & death) What a pitiful excuse -- Cat/Dog Rescue??? I would NEVER leave Hobo behind to starve & die, that's why I seek a good Home for Hobo. I can only have so many housecats & the 3 I have is 3 more than my Mom wants but because they are such good girls & my pets of almost 8 yrs. Mom is allowing them in her home. Do you know how hard it is to get someone to allow animals in their home when they're anti-animals-in-the-house? I know there are very few homeless cats here as the Town's mission has been to eradicate them --- as if they're hurting us in some way. So I can't see where these fertile cats would be for Hobo to impregnate & add to the problem. I've had to pick the least of evils here & conclude that it's cruel to neuter Hobo without a home as wandering Tommies would have a big advantage & try & take his turf. Hobo is a kind cat & has led other homeless cats to FOOD that I provide. A lovely spayed declawed female was tossed out by ex-"responsible" owners. One day I found her cowering behind Hobo waiting for food. I fed her for mnths. and no one would admit she was their cat (obviously she was someone's pet). So I found her a home at Grandpa's camp with 2 other fixed & declawed cats he provides shelter & food for. All 3 cats at his camp have ears frozen off & other damage from almost freezing & starving. He goes to his camp everyday feeds the animals & puts on the wood stove fire to heat the camp for the day. He's a 75 yr. old Hero. He refuses more cats now due to age & responsibility for these rescued 3 cats. Bit he loves them & also feeds the Deer & Wild Turkeys. Those who understands cats know that as easy as it sounds 'spay/neuter' many homeless cats will not survive unattended if 'fixed' as the drive to fight for life is weakened & they are unable to fend for themselves & since they have no Hero to rescue them they'll die a pitiful death. Don't discourage people to FEED these homeless cats because first they NEED to be fed. Do you know how many Cruel people have shewed/chased off hungry desperate cats rather than feed them??? Tell them off!!! HOW CAN ONE SLEEP AT NIGHT, yet it bothers them not to chase off a lone starving cat! Truly my heart breaks for their predicament as the predicament we've put our world animals into. When you research what we're doing to wild/domestic/pets it's so sickening. Perhaps PEOPLE should learn Mercy or be treated as the animals are. Watch Animal Detectives on Animal Planet if you have the stomach for it - do something, join Animal Activist Organizations & truly be a Hero. P.S. Though I leave this small community soon & return to the big city TO, I will never give up the fight to change the Laws & Bi-Laws that govern shelters in rural communities (City too but more humane bi-laws in lrge cities) not by much. These Laws have to be changed ---- Everyone should find their community bi-laws for shelters & so called strays & get them changed. Go to local shelters and see the cats & dogs in one room in distress in cages & slated for death (see if you'd take an animal there). Otherwise challenge the Mayor or call in the Fed's to investigate your shelter complaints. I STILL NEED A LOVING PERSON WHO WILL GIVE HOBO THE HOME HE DESERVES.
> > >It's threads like this that really bother me. I wish people would get > off [quoted text clipped - 54 lines] > > kili Mmhsb - 09 Apr 2004 23:03 GMT Also, Hobo is not a lap cat by no means. He at his choice will sit on my lap & allow me to cautiously pet/groom him. He will not be picked up/carried... He was abandoned age app. 5-6 months old, I first saw the smart boy clinging to an icebank on a partioned off part of my backyard eating the peanuts (unsalted & shelled) that I throw into fenced area for birds & squirrels. Apparently that kept him alive - then I began with cat food, shelter, search for owner... He's not beyond rehabilitation & appears he can become a "lap cat" with patience & kindness. A Memorable Good Friday & Easter to All!

Chris - 09 Apr 2004 23:07 GMT This was posted in another group & I thought it might help---I'm sorry you're being criticized by others for your efforts--you deserve better than that... Hobo sounds very adoptable... maybe you could go to that website and also e-mail the person listed---Good luck to you & Hobo ===================================================== Hi all,
I realize I don't usually post to this particular list, so forgive me if I come off like I'm spamming. I honestly don't mean to be, I just don't have as much time to post in newsgroups as I used to. I lurk here, but don't get a chance to post often. (There was a time when half my entire day would be eaten up by the usenet, so I have forced myself to cut back! LOL) (Oh, and any of you on rec.pets or rec.pets.dogs will notice that this is a cross-post. Just covering all the bases! :))
Anyways, I just wanted to let you all know of a new canadian website for animal adoption. The url is http://www.adoptananimal.ca and the site lets you search from about 900 shelters, rescues and pounds. You can search by type of animal, breed, and province or zip code.
(I will confess that I had a hand in the development of this site, so I'm especially excited about it.. hehe)
If you guys have any ideas or suggestions, we would love to hear them.
We're trying to make this the best possible resource for everyone in Canada. Any ideas/suggestions/comments can be emailed to agianotto@adoptananimal.ca
I hope to hear from some of you!
Thanks! Alison

Any help appreciated!! Mmhsb - 10 Apr 2004 05:34 GMT Yea very nice service and site Chris, thanks! Noticed that absent from the list/resources are the independent Rural Shelters, like the one in my community and in many rural/remote communities. That is sad, like I said many independent shelters are only under Municipal Bi-Laws & the Owners are paid based on number of animals put-down/killed through municipal tax revenues. These are the one's you don't see on the site or anywhere trying to adopt. Also I did contact several wonderful animal rescue... organizations ---- all overburdened looking to adopt and not for animals needing adoption --- not a viable option there for Hobo. I need a farm/home within 100 miles of Mississauga/Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Will pay all expenses... deliver him... I'm offering a Free Adoption on Condition I am convinced he will be cared for (food, water, shelter, attention, and hopefully another cat/s companion). I will take him to my Vet and have shots, ck-up, fixed... Even a pro-cat farm with barn is good, he's an ace hunter too. Or with some patience he would make a loyal loving mature house cat. Anyone?

Mmhsb - 19 Apr 2004 18:38 GMT Hello, since you two have been so helpful in A Home for Hobo? I'd like to say thanks for your concern! It's not the dream home I would have wanted for my only 'boy' Hobo --- but it will do. My long time neighbor has helped, moved Hobo's house onto his property. We built a platform against his house wall, set Hobo's deluxe 'dog house' on it and added a 'lean-to' roof over the platform. The platform floor covered in carpet to lounge, with a feeding area. He'll be given breakfast & supper each day, bought 3-4 months food & will visit by then. My neighbor loves cats/dogs/animals & knows how much Hobo means to me. I'm moving about 5 hr. drive end of month., plan to visit Hobo & neighbor every 3 months. I trust my soon to be ex-neighbor as he's 'Grandpa' the cat saving hero I was posting about. Hobo has adjusted to his improved home next door. Oh, the look on his face when he came for super and no house on my step! Lured him across the driveway with Salmon (his favorite) and he was soon eating & chirping away, so happy his house was just next door. Imagine the horror of a cat returning home to find he's been left behind!?! I'll be leaving a piece of my heart with Hobo the lovable one. I miss him already...I'll still be looking for loving parents near Toronto for Hobo so he can come inside and be a lap cat as he'll be 5 the Sept. & I could see him more often too! Thanks! Mari, & hope your cat is

How far from Toronto are you looking at? I'm in Owen Sound right now and we're hopeing to rent a house soon, so that we'll be able to have more than 2 cats living with us. We maybe able to take Hobo off your hands depending on what we get for a house. Our apartment only allows us to have two pets that aren't in a tank or cage meaning cats or dogs. We can have a tank of fish currently also.

Mmhsb - 20 Apr 2004 01:00 GMT Thanks allot Kili! Chris too! WOW TINA - Owen Sound is a great place & close enough to Toronto. I was hoping that here I could find a special person for Hobo, one that understands cats! I'd love to get him 'fixed' (he's been baptized!) and deliver him to a Home and a Family of his own. I hope you find a house Tina -- did you try an internet search? I used to go up to your area from TO during summer vacations. Nice place. Thanks so much Tina, ask me & I'll tell you more about Hobo. He's adorable, I call him Superman because no matter where he is he comes running to the rescue whenever a wandering Tommie approaches my fenced yard & my 3 girls start screaming. He's kept all Tomes away from the girls, rolls & purrs & gives them lovey eyes (for yrs.) yet not knowing the 'girls' are (sterile/frigid/fixed)! I know at 5 yrs. old this Sept. he'll be too old to handle the rough and competitive outdoor life & deserves much better.

But if we do get one I'll let you know for sure. A third cat might be nice. My husband might not like it but it doesn't hurt to say that he ohh just wandered and wanted to stay hehe. I don' t know.. Owen Sound is kinda small. I'm orgionally from Sault Ste Marie. That's where our cats are from. I have a good job I like and my husband has a good job he likes but it looks like St. Catherine's might be our next stop. He's gonna apply for a training manager position. I hope that's okay for you.

Mmhsb - 21 Apr 2004 07:28 GMT Keep in touch then & good luck with re-locating, if you do. It's been hard to get Hobo used to his house next door. He sits on the step & tries to get his food. I can't pick him so coax him over, but he's leery. His plate ends up empty next door so he must be there at night. Do I ever feel guilty.
