about 3 times a year, my cat gets a nasty hairball, the same thing always
happens:
I wake up to a nasty pile of cat puke with a lump of hair in it the
size of a cat turd, at this point I give him a bit of the furball treatment
"lube" in a tube and some food in a clean bowl.
kitty ends up going in and out of the catbox every 10 minutes trying to
take a crap, eventually he does, but he keeps going back in there and tries..
after going in there about 20-30 times he strains so hard that he pisses out
1 or 2 drops of pink pee (bloody??) sometimes he does this on the bed.
this goes on for about the next 12 hours, until he craps again, passing
a bit of hair along with his crap.

I realize that the furball probably upsets his digestive tract to the
point where he thinks he has to go to the bathroom all the time until
it passes through him.  my vet says this is all normal, try to brush
him more often and give him the digestive "lube" stuff.  I'm just
concerned about one thing (he says not to worry, but I figure I'd ask
actual cat owners also), when he strains so hard that a drop of blooddy
pee comes out, is this serious?  Although kitty gets over it and is 100%
back to normal after passing the rest of the furball within about 12 hours,
the vet says not to worry but I've got a gut feeling that it can't be very
well, or happy for kitty.  Is there anything else I could do, like give him
a suppository to make him pass it faster?

thanks

You should give him the hairball treatment ALL the time, not just after he
horks one up.  If you give it too him ALL the time, he will pass the hair
more frequently (with his regular poop) instead of it building up in his
system.  That, along with regular brushing, will help lessen his
constipation problem.

Agreed. Clearly your cat is prone to hairballs more then others, so do it as
a preventative treatment. In fact, I have 5 words for you: Hills "Science
plan" Hairball diet(or "Indoor cat"). Buy at any vets/pet shop. It's really
food, and not medication, but it works miracles, and my Shadow hasn;t had a
hairball for ages now while used to be every few days. I always have a bag
here, and give them about 10 peaces of it every day, as a treat and day LOVE
it. It basically contains some oily bits that makes hairs easier to pass
through. A definite winner and worth every penny.

Feed your cat some Valvoline 10W-30 motor oil it slides those
hairballs right out. I also let my cats watch me take a sh.t in the
litter box, so they know what a healthy turd looks like and they try
to imitate the example.

First off, while I do maintain a yahoo address, that's not it; 2nd I do NOT
post via Google Groups at all; 3rd, the only medication I take is Claritin
for my allergies (and an occasional aspirin for aches & pains) & 4th - you
didn't even get my spam-me-not email address right!

should you worry about a one time incident, no.  but from the post, this
isn't a one time incident.  I agree with the others that you should either
feed the hairball remedy  more often, and or switch to a hairball food.
Good luck!
