This time it was a feew weeks, but she's never been away for more than 2
or 3 days before. So I'm definitely happy today.

Yes, she looks just as well fed as she always does. I'm living in a
rural area, so I guess she hasn't suffered anything.

Is your cat fixed? If not. You better get to it or you might be posting
a completely different story. Actually even if your cat is fixed & you
let your cat out. Your cat may not return one day

She's fixed, and she's normally inside all day, but she didn't return
this time (untill today). She's living in a rural area, so she likes to
be out and has a large area to be within, but she always returns within
a short time. I know this may happen in the future too, but at least I'm
happy today!

I'm sohappy for ya! And beautiful cat BTW.
How long was he (she?) been gone? If it's a male it may have been following
the male hormons and searched for a girlfriend which means he will do it
again. Please consider having him done which would stop him from roaming and
giving you a heart attack everytime he dissapears. Operation itself is very
easy on males it costs little and it will not only stop him roaming but also
fighting with other cats, spraying around the house and creating more
unwanted kittens.
I know how releaved you were when he finally showed up back home. My Charlie
has done that to me once dissapearing for 2 weeks. He was a stray but would
always used to come by for lunch. Then he dissapeared for 2 weeks and I
realised I was bessotted with him and cried my eyes out thinking something
must have happened. I searched and searched. Finally I couldn;t sleep
anymore and I made an emotional appeal to God, begging him to just let me
see him so I know he's OK. Believe it or not, the very next morning, what
woke me up: the fight between 2 cats right outside my window, and who was
fighting: Charlie ! I run outside extatic, picked him up, and thanked God.
After a nice meal and a sleepover, the vet and the op was booked for the
next morning and Charlie has moved in since. Charlie is now a massive lazy
boy who loves to sleep on the bed and eat cashews :)
I hope your kitty will soon be back home every day!

It's a female, but she's never been away more than a day or three
before, so I was definitely happy when seh showed up outside my door

Oh a girl :) I hope she is spayed or may have more then one cat on your door
:)
I wonder why would a female go away. Hmm, two things come to mind: Cats
often have more then one home. Often 2 or 3 families will think this is
their cat and cat will quite happily have 2-3 lunches in one day with humans
being never the wiser. Some families over here in UK even went to court
fighting over the ownership of a cat who cleverly played them both :) So,
make sure your cat likes it better at your house as maybe elsewhere she gets
tuna and kippers ever day :) Of course that may not be the case and your cat
might just be roaming and having fun/looking for boys/squirrels/mice.
Second reason is like Dave said: being locked in somewhere accidently (or
God forbid on purpose). It happens and it can be fatal, pls read my reply
to Dave's post.
Best wishes

sometimes they get locked accidentally in strange places.
I remember loosing my cat for a few days, only to discover she was
accidentally locked in the shed. it must of sneaked in there when I wasn't
looking last time I was in there.

Oh Dave, you were both so lucky! My Tiara's sister Rusta (who belong to a
friend) got locked into a flat when people went on holidays for 3 weeks.
When they came back and found her, Rusta was barely alive, and a sight that
make your heart bleeds. The vet couldn;t do anything for her, it was the
only humane decision to put her to sleep. Rusta was the sweetest girl and
wouldn't harm a mouse and I spent many many days crying over her and
thinking about what must she have been going through those 3 weeks with no
food and water.

I don't think that's what happened here, because I live in a rural area
with almost no neighbours. And she didn't seem to have suffered in any
kind, she is looks just as well fed as she always does. But you'll never
know. I'll be even more careful in the future.

Are there any coyotes or fox in the vicinity? Any wild animals who
would harm her? Better to tell her she is a "housecat" only.

No, here in the southernmost part of Norway foxes and other wild
creatures are a seldom sight. The only animal of any size would maybe be
a badger now and then. But, no, the cat is just as she has always been.

are foxes a fair fight for a cat?
I've seen cats that would eat a fox for breakfast.
