Sabrina's Mom - 01 Apr 2004 14:42 GMT
Sabrina - my 8 yr old black cat who lost her leg to cancer last fall.
Chloe - the 2 yr old, 55 lb  lab mix dog I rescued a year ago January.

Sabrina was none too happy when Chloe came barrelling into the
household.  Afterall, she was still a puppy - a 55lb puppy at that.

Over the past year the heirachy in the household has been established.
Sabrina rules the roost, Chloe does not.   Sabrina has no problem
opening a can of whoopass with her 1 declawed paw on Chloe and that
usually is enough to deter Chloe from any playful behavior with her.

Sabrina has no problems now, coming out and joining us in the living
areas when Chloe's around.  But last night was a site that was totally
new....

Chloe is crated during the day when we are not at home.   Her crate
sits in the area between living and kitchen.   At night she
volunteerally goes into her crate to sleep.   Her toys are stored
there.  That is "her" space.  And she likes it.

Last night at dinner, we are eating, and Chloe is intently focusing on
us to see if we just might ..  offer her a treat.  (not gonna happen,
but this is how we do thing severy night).    Sabrina comes out to
join the family, hobbles over to the crate, and inside.   She's
meowing the entire time, goes inside the crate and lays down.

I was actually worried about her.   I'm not sure what was wrong or why
she would do such a thing.    Chloe, on the other hand (who I expected
to come and make some sort of scene over the cat being in her crate) -
just totlly ignored the whole situation.

It was weird....

Actually, it's not weird.  It's Sabrina's way of establishing dominance over
Chloe.  If Sabrina takes over Chloe's space, she rules the roost!  My cat
has dominance over my Aussie puppy too.  Kai won't even walk near a doorway
if my cat is standing there.  His ears go back, his tail tucks and he slinks
away.  I could have a 10 lb steak in the room and if Moire' is in the
doorway, Kai won't go near.
