I have a cat that when he has a bowel movement the smell immediately fills
the room and it is horrific. I feed him dry cat food (Nutro) and even with
other catfoods its the same. is this typical?? if not is it something with
the food.

As far as I know - all bowel movements smell bad, be they feline, human or
otherwise.
Supposedly when it comes to cats, if a high quality food is fed, the "aroma"
is lessened, but I haven't found this to be so. I feed my cat Wellness dry
and Nutro canned and when she does her business - we are definitely aware of
it.
I just dash down to the litter box and flush the contents down the toilet,
sprinkle a bit of Arm & Hammer litter box deodorizer in the box and presto -
fresh air! :c)

Whooooooops, I don't think I was clear. Instead of saying "contents" I
should have said poop. Actually the pee goes in the toilet as well. I use a
flushable clumping litter.

hmmmmm, stuff I use expands into guck after a couple hours (great for
driveway cleaning), but there's some sand in it that scratches porcelain :(

Maybe try a clumping kittylitter, or something he can definitely cover
up with. Catshit stinks. And if he's ticked at you it stinks more.

Out of curiosity, is his stool normal? Not mushy or diarrhea like? Some
of my fosters have had worms that gives them really bad smelling diarrhea.
If you can't get to the box right away to empty it, and if you use
clumping, try Fresh Step w/cedar - sweet smelling litter. I love it,
although do to the number of cats I have, I buy the cheapy stuff.
I also have something called a "litter locker" - great for clumping
litter. - like a diaper genie for cats. Keeps the smell down and easy to
dispose of waste. Can find them at Target and Petco - maybe others too.

I used to use Nutro Dry cat food as well, and whenever the cat went the the
litter box, we would have to sit and spray the room afterwards. Alot of
people that I know that use Nutro have that problem. I have switched foods
and the odor has gone down alot. Try using a food with yucca schidigera
extract. I am currently using Nutrience Dry and Royal Canin dry, and both of
them help control the odor.

I have the same problem except I have 5 cats & only one stinks to high
heaven. My friend has 2 two 6 week old kittens & one of them is just like
ours .Another thing I notce is that the my cat bowels are bigger & a
different color then the oter ones I have. Believe me I know what you
mean when you say the smell is horrific. It'll knock you for a loop. If
that was my very first cat? Believe me I wouldn't have the other 4-but
Miss Parker was the last cat. I know. Sophisicated name for a smelly a--
cat. I also feed my cats dry cat food. How old is your cat?
