Cats rule!

I grew up in a cat family.  My parents say we did have a dog until I
was 3, but after that we have always had a cat, sometimes two.

This week I am walking a friend's two yellow labrador dogs.  While
they are nice enough animals, I just can't get over the attention
they require!  Every day they need two 30-45 minute walks to sh.t
and also burn up the energy they accumulate.  And they are always
jumping all over you and drooling and doing all the gross things
dogs do.

My kitty is the perfect pet in my opinion.  She craps in a little
box which is easy to clean every few days and comes and goes as
she pleases.  All I have to do is open the door for her.  While
she likes attention, she doesn't require it 24 hours a day like
the dogs do.  And she is so clean!  The dogs are always rolling
in mud and need to be hosed down after coming back from their
walks.  And dogs have certain disgusting habits, such as their
tendency to eat poop on the ground, even if it's some other dog's
poop or even a different species.

Aside from cats, the other perfect pet is a snake.  I have an
adorable 5-year-old gopher snake (Pituophis cetafines) and he is
just such a wonderful little pet.  The neat thing about snakes
is that while they may tolerate being handled, they are probably
happiest just being left alone in their little hide box.  Toss
in a mouse or two every week and they're in snake heaven.  A
few years ago I went on vacation for two weeks, left my snakes
all alone, and when I got back they were just fine.  I don't
think they even noticed my absence.

I agree with the things about the dogs, my mom has 3 and my and my kitty
live upstairs in a (rather large) room, the dogs always smell nasty, even
if they get a bath once a week, and piss on everything.  Also about reptiles
in general, I have a pet turtle that pretty much does the same thing kitty
does all day.. sits on his rock and sleeps while sunbathing, though kitty
just sits anywhere and sleeps :)
Dog owners are nasty too, especailly in my neighborhood.. you go for a walk
and theres a pile of dog sh.t on the sidewalk every couple blocks... I can't
believe these stupid people own an animal and they can't even clean up after
it.

Being a dog owner, I have to agree..some people just could care less
about where their dogs go...Mine goes only on my property, because
thats the only place he is allowed. Every week I then go out and
shovel it all up...sucks, but what can ya do? lol

Godd*mn dog crapped RIGHT IN FRONT of my door the other day. Stepped
outside, squish.... Been on the lookout for that dog owner (found crap
in front of my house before). When I see him/her, it's "pick that sh.t
up or I will follow you to your house, so I know where you live and
any dogshit found in front of my place will be in your letterbox.". I
mean sheesh, what are they thinking? "Hmm, that sh.t is right in front
of that person's door, ah well, I am sure they won't mind..."

Uhm sorry didn't mean to go on a rant there, but it just ticked me off
so much :-/

But I agree, cats are the best!!! I wouldn't want to miss mine!

A few weeks after we moved into our house, we put a sign in the front
yard asking people not to let their dogs use our garden as their potty.
Can you believe somebody left a note accusing us of being
un-neirghborly? WTF? Am I supposed to let your dog crap in my garden? I
don't think so!

You can pick it up and put it in your garden..........  I'm just kidding.
Wow, I can't believe that someone left you a note!  That's plain ole RUDE.
Go take your kid and let him pee on their fence.  See how they like it.

Not *all* dog owners are nasty, but I agree about not picking up the poop
part.  When I take my dog for a walk, I always take a grocery bag with me.
When the dog hears the rustle of the bag, he automatically runs to bring me
his leash.  It's almost like the Pavlovian thing........ hee hee hee.

LOL! Yes, some dogs are like that.  On the other hand, my dog, a
Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix is the calmest, nicest dog in the area.
He gets along just great with my four cats and is actually scared to
death of one of them because thats the cat that rules the house, and
the dog!

Well, I don't agree with letting your cat out, but thats your personal
decision.
Yes, they are quite clean! Its nice isn't it?

Not all dogs tho, at least not any of the ones I have owned.
Well, except for the Cocker Spaniel I had when I was younger, she
liked to roll around in puddles..

LOL.  My cat rules the house too and my dog is just terrified of her.  He's
absolutely infatuated with the other cat, tho.  It's the funniest thing to
see him lick her face.  She can't stand it, but she lets him do it.  She
squints up her eyes and grimaces - yes, she grimaces! - and she patiently
waits for him to finish.  It's hysterical.

Thats funny that she licks them! I think if my dog tried to do that
he'd have a face full of claws.. I have one cat that grimaces when he
doesn't like his food...He kinda looks at ya like 'what the hell is
this crap we have to eat this morning?' ..and then he makes this
really bizaare (sp?) face at ya for a few seconds...
I remember, as kid, plucking claws from my Irish Setters nose all the
time. That must have hurt like heck!

LOL.  The dog, so far, has pretty much escaped claws.  If I can catch the
moment, I'll snap a pic of the dog licking the cat's face.  It usually only
lasts a second or two, but the cat makes the funniest face!  You just *know*
she hates it!

Of course cats rule! Duh! :)  I love dogs too, but they are too high
maintenance and way too dirty. I love being able to hold one of my cats
and bury my nose in their fur. I wouldn't dare do that with a stinky dog. :)

It might be genetic. My MIL's dearly departed dog was very stinky, all 6
pounds of her. She would smell like shampoo for the first few hours
after bathing, but her regular smell would be back very soon. :) Stinky.

It may be a breed thing, it can also be an allergy thing.  My ex's dog
stinks to high heaven because he's got a skin allergy.  My tiger-striped cat
also has skin allergies and she stinks a little more than my black and white
cat.  It is what it is.  God, my best friend's dog, tho, WHOOOOOO!  STINKY!
He loves to go in the ocean so he has chronic yeast infections in both of
his ears.  Wow.  Don't get in a small room with him!  My friends keep
treating it, but, man!  It will never clear up unless he stays out of the
water and I'll tell ya, that's just not going to happen!  :-)

Three worst smells one can be exposed to when they work for a vet:
     1. Anal glands
     2. dirty/stinky/sick ears
     3. Bad skin (usually associated with Sharpeis)
Yuck, get two or all three together and look out.

Don't forget stinky feet....   We had a time when Chloe had a food
allergy and it caused stinky feet.  Awful....   But once we found the
source of the food allergy and switched foods, she's back to being a
good smelling pup.

Stinky feet from a food allergy?  I didn't know that could happen!  Were
there sores on her feet or did they just stink?

sores from her licking.   They itched because of the allergy, so she
licked them.   What happens when you mix dark areas and warmth and
moisture - bacteria ...

It wasn't a fun time - between the feet issues, ear issues (yeast
infections) and the staff infections in her "armpit" areas...  But
once we cut out chicken and corn out of the diet - all is better now.
:-)

And we are really surprised at how little she does smell.   I've been
to houses with big dogs that smell to high heaven...  when Chloe came
into our lives that was a big worry.

Then again, I've gone into houses that as you walk in the front door
you KNOW they have a cat...  you can smell it.   You can smell the
cat, the cat food, and the litter box.   That is just as bad as a wet
dog.

Glad that you found and fixed Chloe's problem!  Wow.  I had a dog that got
staff in his skin from allergies due to grass, cockroaches and dust mites,
but luckily no food allergies.  Boy, staff does stink!  Whew!

Wet dog, yeah, that's kind of smelly, but not all that bad.

I've been in homes like that, but they had something like 32 cats.  They
only had five or six cats that stayed indoors.  The rest of them just
wandered around outside along with two mid-sized dogs.

It probably depends on the dog itself...I had an Irish Setter that
wreaked when he got real old, even after a bath....but I think it was
more his skin than anything..  My Cocker Spaniel, her mouth area stunk
like uuuh...poo poo.. It was enough to make ya wretch.. My Golden
Retriever and Pit Bull, they didn't smell at all and my current
Rottweiler/Shepherd mix, he has no odor either..

The fur on my cats' foreheads smells like whatever flavor lip gloss I have
been wearing when I kiss them. Surya understands the forehead kiss and when
I make the "kissing sound" she will put her forehead right up to my lips for
her kiss. She is extremely affectionate.

Dogs typically only smell bad if they're let outside for a long time in
hot weather.  House dogs who poop on newspaper or who have been trained
to use a litter box don't smell as badly as that.

I like cats because they're quiet and pretty independent as long as they
have food, water and clean litter available.  I like dogs because of
their loyalty and constant willingness to dish out the love.  You can
shower a cat with love and while she may give you a few purrs, a nice
snuggle with her head, she'll walk off and not come back for hours.  Dogs
are always there -- beside you or at your feet.

I have reasons I like both animals.  But since I prefer peace and quiet,
I opted for cats.  I may, however, one day get a small furry dog that
will sleep in the bed with me. :-)

Where do you live?  Doesn't sound like anyplace that I'd be traveling to in
the wintertime.  <g>.  Kai does have gorgeous eyes, doesn't he?  And you're
fostering all of those babies?  Aren't you going to keep one for yourself?

Pittsburgh Pennsylvania - not much here to see.  Natives are nuts over
Steelers (football - American style), beer and boating (2nd highest number
of registered boaters in states I'm told).  Hills, lots of hills.  And snow,
yuck.  We've been known to get blizzards in March, so not out of the woods
yet.

The fostering - this all started because I lost my oldest, I was down to
three cats.  Wanted to have a baby to "bond" with - make it cat #4, he
stayed, so did more.  I just lost one of my others on Monday (he was 14,
miss my big buddy), and in the interim have decided to keep another foster
(not pictured, although she is black too).  Grand total of 7 cats (my own),
3 dogs, and now my borders as I call them.  :)  I made the shelters promise
me they will NOT let me keep anymore.  :-)  So the five new ones were all
fosters, two were full grown adults.  For my sanity I need to stop adopting.
I have found it's easier for me to give up the babies - they get adopted
quickly, as opposed to adults.

I plan on adding on to my website to include a page of my own critters.  :)

As a player, coach or staff?  I'm so clueless who most of the players are.
It's not the one with the curly hair who was from a pacific island was it???
(If is, small world - met him on an airplane last year, then met his uncle

What a thread!!!  Does it hold the record for number of consecutive posts on
this ng?  At least those not involving controversy and/or Bob Brenchley?
Anyway, I am really enjoying it, and the associated pics of people's
furkids.

And I stand in awe of any dog (Chloe) who gets by on a minimum of a monthly
bath.  In fact, I just don't get it.  But what a sweetheart, all the same.

Thanks, everyone, for a fun read.

Sure do.  Cat people are generally very nice people.  Dogs, bless them, are
wonderful creatures, but more easily fooled.  They sooo want to please and
be loved that they're not very discriminating about who they associate with.
So dog people, while often every bit as nice as cat people, are
statistically more likely to have bad apples in the barrel.  And horse
people, well let's just not even go there! (Lots of nice ones, but they tend
to be skewed toward the seriously out-of-round.)  A cat or two in the mix,
though, has a salutary effect -- keeps people from going way too doggy or
horsy.  Also cats frequently choose their people, rather than the other way
around, and (being creatures of great sensitivity and deliberateness) seldom
make bad choices.

All of the above is said somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but that doesn't keep it
from being the absolute truth.  ;)

It's a fun thread, but I have a *real* problem with the original

took place, and I am *very* offended.  I would suggest the original

I might be mistaken, but it seems to me like TOP is the same guy who
trolls the mexican newsgroups. He likes to change nic's once a week to

Speaking of starving. Many years ago, when I lived in NJ (Which isn't
sucha  bad place as everyone makes it out to be!), I was walking back
home from the local Krauzers, which is a convenience store chain out
this way. My walk took me through the dumpster area behind the store.
One day while walking, I heard a 'mewing'. I knew what it was right
off the bat and started looking...sure enough the sound was coming
from the dumpster...upon closer inspection, I found the sound coming
from a duct taped shoebox! Well, needless to say, I ripped it open and
there were a bunch of dead kittens, but at least the mewing one was
alive! I took the poor skinny thing, covered in her own excrement,
home and then called the SPCA. They came over and I showed them the
box and they questioned me about the time and what not and I think
they questioned some employees at the place too.  They asked me if I
wanted to keep the kitten and of course, I did..
I named her Angel and she was the sweetest cat I have ever owned and
even tho she only lived till she was 9 (Brain tumor), she was always
wonderful and grateful I like to think.

People are just sick to do stuff like that..UGH!

Our gang somehow got started on asparagus peelings--not the asparagus
itself, but the peelings. I think it was a competitive thing, a "monkey see,
monkey do" phenomenon, but now they're all hooked.

I have read that garlic is toxic to cats, so you'd better make sure that you
only allow her garlic-free spicy food

Well it doesn't say to *not* feed your cats ham, chicken and pork, which is
about all my cats will eat anyway.   They don't even like beef unless it's
raw and in hamburger form.  Thanks for posting the link to the article, tho,

She is good, she is trained well, and if she wants to go out, she lets
me know.   If she is ready to come in, she rings the doorbell.

Let me tell you - I LOVE going for walks and runs with her.   30 - 45
mins a day a few days a week is good exercise!   It really helps me
keep my young, girlish figure and my butt from growing too big from
computerchairspread.   :)

Also, my Chloe doesn't stink.   She gets a bath about once a month in
the summers and once every few months in the winter.   But she's not
one to go running thru the mud or rolling thru the dirt.

Chloe is also a total sweetheart and loves Sabrina.   SHe respects
Sabrina as queen of the household and is willing to take a back seat
in the pecking order around the house.   But she's also first to
protect Sabrina if something happens.

Not all dogs are like Golden Retrievers.   But let me tell you, GR's
are also wonderful dogs and if trained well are incredibly smart and
loyal.

You've got that nasty computerchairspread virus too?  So it's not just

Kai loves to go to the beach and find a decaying eel to roll in.  Lovely
smell that carseats absorb rather quickly.

Kai is afraid of my tiger cat, Moire', but is absolutely head-over-heals
infatuated with my black and white cat Reggie.  Reg tolerates him for the
most part, but she'll throw a swing or two his way when he gets a little
boisterous.

Yeah - and for some reason this winter season its spread wildly around
these parts...  (damned knee has acted up and limits my exercise).

>Kai loves to go to the beach and find a decaying eel to roll in.  Lovely

Chloe hates the water - so we go to the beach and she's more
interested in playing with the other people than anything else.
She'd roll in a dead fish if I let her, I'm sure!   But I've got
leather seats and bring a big moving blanket to throw over the seats -
it goes in the washer well, and the car stays cleaned up easily.

On the other hand - she saved me from a snake in the house once - but
let me tell you - she rolled in that and I swear it must have been a
skank or something - it reeeked!!!   Thankfully a bath cleaned her up.

Ever smell a cat (or dog) that had a run in w/ a skunk?  That odor
doesn't come out in the bath water easily!

>Kai is afraid of my tiger cat, Moire', but is absolutely head-over-heals

There are 2 instances that crack me up about the cat and dog.   One
was the time that Sabrina opened a can of whoopass on Chloe and pinned
her up against the slidding glass door.   A 50lb dog being pinned and
getting an a.s whooping by a 17lb declawed black cat.

The other was after Sabrina's surgery and she was down to 3 legs.
The "Black Knight" scene from Monty Python's "Holy Grail"...   Sabrina
still trying to whoop Chloe, but forgetting that she no longer has her
right arm...  the twitching of the shoulder.   It was funny to watch,
and Chloe just sat there with this perplexed look on her face...

>But nothing is as good as *our* dogs,  right?  <g>

Most certainly...  Although, I fall in love with all cats and dogs...
I'd like to make all of them mine.   :-)   (well, the soft, cuddly,

I think my GR is missing some of her brains.  :-)  But she is a good dog,

She's very gentle, has a soft mouth like a true GR.  Although she has in the
past used some of the cats as squeek toys (never hurt them, just playing).

I am a sucker for a furry face...  and when you see her face - how
could you not be,...

GR's have always has that sense of missing part of their brains.  It's
gotta be the "blonde" in the hair.   :-)    I always remember that
"America's funniest home videos" show where they had the video of the
GR who was pushing a rock up and down the walk way, and they voice
overed w/ "pushing a rock, pushing a rock, pushing a rock, turning
around...  pushing a rock" in one of those "dummed down" voices - like
the warner bro's bugs bunny cartoons with "George"...  or the guy from
Of Mice and Men...

Anyhow - every GR I've ever known is like that.  Truely smart as a
whip, gentle as can be, sweet and totally eager to please, yet appear
to be dumb as a rock at times.    I love em.   :-)

Chloe loves the laser pointer.  Then again, so does Sabrina....   What is it
with those things - animals go nuts chasing them...  Its so much fun

Dad was a lab guy, and we've had many, but GR's are awesome and I've always
liked them.  I think that is part of why I was so attracted to Chloe - she's
got that retriever face... and the intelligence, but is lacking in size,
which isn't so bad for me.  :)

Orlando in summer months does suck - too damned hot.   I'm on the west
coast - we got the cool gulf breezes that keep temps nicer.   The humidity
is something to get used to - but let me tell you, I go to a dry climate and
I'm troubled with the bloody noses.

Just to rub it in, I got home from work tonight and DH already is getting
the boat ready.  We'll be on the water first thing tomorrow morning...  :)

My best friend's dog is a Golden Retriever.  He's a GREAT dog, but he truly

First thing that amazed me after getting my first cat last year, after
having had a dog my whole life, was how little you have to actually do for
them.
