The warm weather will soon be coming and flea and tick season will be
upon us once again. I am the proud owner of 2 one year old cats ( 1
male, 1 female ). Last year, I adopted the 2 cats who are brother and
sister and who were left as strays in a cardboard box on a boating dock.

Anyway, even though they are both fixed, the male goes outside now
because he is the bigger of the two, and he is a GREAT hunter because he
catches mice for us that wander near the house and/or garage. But the
thing that worries me is that the people who live next door to us (
about 10 feet separates our houses ), have about 20 sh.t Zu dogs running
around in their yard ( chain fenced ). They also run a dog breeding and
dog grooming service, so there are dogs constantly coming and going.

I have seen both my cats starting to scatch themselves all over the past
few days, and now I am worried. Hopefully its just dry skin, and not
dredded fleas!!!!!  But to be on the safe side, I still want to protect
them with fleadops. I have read that "Advantage" is the best, but its
also expensive, like $45 dollars I think. I have seen cheaper ones in
the store such as "Zodiac" flea drops for as little as $7.99 which says
100% satisfaction guarantee or your money back, as well as "Hartz
Advanced Care" flea drops for $12.99 which claims to kill both fleas and
flea eggs.

But are these ones any good??? Do they work or are they a waste of
money??? Are they safe??? I would like to get "Advantage"  but I am
currently only working part-time, and can't really afford it, but I
don't want fleas in my home, but from the cats scatching up a storm, it
may be to late???  Do the "Hartz Advanced Care" flea drops work, or do I
need to buy the "Advantage"??? Any info. will greatly be appreciated!!!
Thanks!!!

The Hartz products have been known to make cats sick and even
killed some.  It sickened one of my cats.

Dogs might tolerate it better but spend the extra money and use
Advantage.
It has rare side-effects.

AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS!!!! There is a lawsuit against Hartz because
their products have injured and killed cats. Use only prescription flea
medications, they are the only ones that are safe. petscriptions.com has
good prices, but they need a Rx from your doctor (they will call your
doctor).

Do not use Hartz or Sargents.  Both have been known to make cats sck or kill
them.  I use Advantage - you can find on ebay for a lot less than what vet
or most vet product websites want.  The sellers name is best_cent, depending
on how many tubes you get, I think it will run you around $25 (plus flat
shipping fee).  I did find one website where their prices were cheaper, but
their S&H fee were too high.

I have 7 cats and 3 dogs, plus I foster.  The one shelter I foster for uses
Advantage on their animals.  It really does work.  The neighbor girls found
two kittens and brought them to me, they were covered with fleas.  The
inevitable happened, everyone else got fleas, my poor golden I thought would
scratch herself through the floor.  Within 24 hours of application the
itching stopped.  It's expensive but it's worth the money!

Buy Program. It is safer, has not been known to remove dye from leather, has
no odor, is non-toxic and is usually cheaper. If you are not starting out
with a flea problem and just want to avoid one, product of choice!

I use Program and always recommend it, too.  I like that it's nontoxic and
doesn't have to by put on the skin.  My girls love "Program day" because I
mix it with their very favorite canned food.  They've been on it for 8
years, and never had a flea or a problem of any kind with it. (No, wait.
That's *almost* true.  When Celeste first graduated to the big-cat dose, I
had to give it to her in 2 half-doses  or she would throw it up.  Not a
serious problem. Once she got past 12 lbs. --  which didn't take long since
she is a Maine Coon  -- the full dose has been fine.)

I'm curious about what it costs in Canada -- might the price be higher in
the US for veterinary prescriptions, as it for "people" drugs?  The best
price I've been able to get recently is $30 per six-dose package (which was
equivalent to about $40 Canadian last time I did an exchange .)  And that's
by buying 5 or more pkgs. at a time to get a volume discount.

heheh, while true we have some socialized medical programs, it doesn't
extend to pets yet - I just paid a *whopping* large amount for
antibiotics for a cat that's the same stuff for people (unless somebody
thinks cats like "minty green" flavouring).

Hmm. Oh, well. Just wondered if the drug markups in the US also applied to
pet meds.  You're right, some of them are exactly the same drugs prescribed
for people.  Program perhaps *should* be taken by *some* people...
