What is/are your cat(s) names and how did you come up with them?

I have Pounce who was named when I got him and doesn't fit him since
he is very dignified and hasn't "pounced" in years.

I have Blade who couldn't retract his front claws as a kitten and so
was always scratching us with his "blades"; also we had just rented
the movie Blade and our Blade has very prominent fangs (like a
vampire).

I have Jazz who when I got her I wanted my cats to be PB&J so I was
looking for a J name, my boyfriend at the time was a jazz musician.
Funny thing is the person I know who adopted her sister named her
Jazmine.

I have Toast who is a Himalayan mix and so her "edges" are all
"toasted".

I had an orange cat named Tang, we considered OJ but I didn't like the
OJ Simpson connection so we went with an OJ alternative.  I didn't
consider the alternative meanings of Tang and some of my less mature
friends thought it was amusing I named a Pussy-cat Tang.

When I was a little girl I had Precious who was a Russian Blue, and
this cutesy name didn't fit him as he grew older (he was Mr. Attitude
and a half) so I didn't want any of my other other cats to have cutesy
names.

We have a Tubes.  A grey stripped tabby with white paws and chest.  I have
no clue why we called him Tubes.  We got him from the pet store.  We went in
looking for fish and my husband says Moppie come over here so I said okay.
So he said I want that one.. pointing at Tubes and he said I'm gonna name
him Tubes.  So now he's Tubes.

We also have a Calli.  She's probably called Calli cause she's a Calico.  We
were both going back to school and said well the best company for a cat is
another cat so off we went to the animal shelter and got Calli.

We have Servalan, which is the name of a character in a show
called Blake's 7.  The cat and the character had some very
similar attitudes.

Redaunt was my husband's cat, named after a D&D character of his.

Chelsea Quinn came to us with the name Chelsea, so we added
the Quinn to make her science fiction-y, and because it just
yelled better when necessary.  :-)

Nightwind came to us as Tulip, which simply wasn't elegant
enough.  She is a  black kitty.

Yoda came to us with that name, probably given for his
rather prominent ears.

Annakin and Obi Wan were our replacement kitties when Yoda
died young, so we continued the theme.

Diesel - when he was a kitten he released noxious fumes just about everytime
you picked him up (eventually he out grew this).

I'm going to have to use that on one of my future fosters, I like Diesel!

My ex wife had a kitty named Turbo because he was such a handful. We used
to joke that we were going to send him to Kitty military school.

LOL! That sounds familiar! Around here we talk about sending the
overactive monsters to kitty summer camp!

Someone out there whose business minded could use the Kitty Camp or Kitty
Miliatary School Idea.  It's too bad I don't have enough of the money thing
to set one of those up.  It would be soo cool.  It could be like a Human cat

My cousin's dog went ended up with a Doggie PhD (after regular training
wasn't enough he went to Doggie College and then for his Doggie PhD), the
next step was sending him away for a month for more intensive training.
They decided enough was enough and they were going to just have to rearrange
their behavior to suit his, instead of the other way around.  I can't
believe there isn't something similar for cats???

There is. It's called "having a cat". ;-)

Just tell them you're a fan of the space program and that is why you
chose the name Tang.

What am I missing, what is wrong with naming a cat Tang?

Clucky and Munch are brothers.   Munch is named Munch because he was the
runt of the litter, and no bigger than a Munchkin.  In fact, for the
first month I had him, I carried him around in my insulated plaid-
shirt's breast pocket.

Clucky Chicken was a big 'fraidy-cat, hence chicken.  Just very reserved
and fearful.  Plus, his hair didn't really lay against his body...it
looked vaguely like chicken feathers.  Plus, being an orange tabby, he
was kind of chicken colored too.
Damn I miss him!

Off topic, but do cats who've spent their lives together eventually
realize that their deceased brother/sister is missing?  I don't think
Munch knows he is gone yet...he just knows something is amiss with me.
It seems I had read that cats grieve for their comrades.

Yes.  I believe they do.  When I had to take Emmy into the vets to be curved
for her insulin, the other kitty seemed lost with out her, and looked
through out the house for her.  There is always a big greeting when I bring
someone home from a trip to the vet..   Like people, some kitties are better
at dealing with their grief.

I believe they do.  Years ago I had a female cat, my male would call
out for something at the oddest times, it was almost like he was
looking for this long missing female cat which he regarded as
his daughter.

Piggy backing:

I think it depends on the cat.  A few years back one of our cats definitely
missed one of the other cats when they died.  They spent a lot of time
playing together.

This time around I'm pretty sure Caspa celebrated.  She saw Mindy as the
dominant cat and Mindy wouldn't play with her when she wanted her to play.

It seems to vary greatly with individuals. Many years ago, we successfully
introduced a new kitten, Clio, to our still-young (less than a year old)
Abyssinian, Thales. They became the closest of chums, and constant
companions. One hot July night, we made the mistake of leaving a
window open and Clio, who had only just days earlier been spayed,
sneaked out and was struck by a car and died. Thales was devastated,
and never recovered his once easygoing personality. There is no other
word for it than "depression", and he was never afterward able to
tolerate the presence of any other cat.

More recently, we unfortunately had a very similar experience with two
littermate Abys, Typhon and Zoë, who were likewise inseperable
companions. One evening when she was about a year and a half old,
Zoë got into an inexplicable rage and charged out of the open kitchen
window. A few hours later, she was hit by a car and died. We brought
her into the house where she "lay in state" for several hours. Typhon
sniffed her all over, but showed little sign of distress and, after she was

gone, resumed life as if she had never been there. He did by that time
have another playmate, a younger Somali named Kephi, and we
soon after successfully introduced a new kitten, Gracie, to the family.
But if Typhon ever misses his sister, he keeps it well and truly
hidden from us.

When Tang passed away this summer the other cats seemed to think he had
somehow gotten caught in the spare bedroom that is off limits.  They stood
vigil outside the door (like they do if someone is trapped in a cabinet or
closet), till I let them go in and investigate.  It took Blade a few months
to move back to his spot on the bed that he had been displaced from when
Tang moved in.

I really worry about Blade and Jazz if anything ever happens to one of them
I don't know what the other will do.

Edgar and Poe.

I wanted to name my first cat after a famous scientist - Schroedinger.  My
girlfriend... well, she said "no."  I thought it was brilliant, but yanno.

So after running through the list of names (Newton, Tesla, Bohr, etc), we
couldn't agree.  So we went for authors and artists instead.  Joyce,
Shakespeare ("Shakes"), Homer, Proulx, Rembrandt, Kant, Gogh.

Then we decided on Poe.  Name of *two* famous artists, and she thought it
wasn't so geeky.

Then we got another cat... Edgar was the natural choice.  We call him Eddie,
but I love telling people I have Edgar and Poe.

Anyone think I need a third cat?

Nobody in Norway would find it strange if you called the cat Schroedinger -
one of the more popular programs on Norwegian television is a popular
science program called "Schroedinger's Cat"...

With my name and my interest for cats, no wonder people call me Schroedinger
from time to time :-)

Ok, 8 names so get ready:

My first cat was named Tyrone - because he was white, my dad gave him a
"black" name.  He was big, beautiful and my baby.  I miss him.

Z - cat #2, because he was striped like a zebra

#3 - Elmo - liked Elmo from Sesame Street, thought it would be a good name
for a cat, he's crabby, not at all like his name sake.

#4 - Stumbles - got him from my vet, the techs had named him, it fits.  Has
neurological problems, can't walk a straight line to save his life,
sometimes he falls, he's a sweety.  One of the most affectionate cats I
have.

#5 - Tiny Shorty Little Guy - my first foster failure - he was super tiny
when I first brought him home (3 weeks old), and it fit.  His "proper" name
is Slate (he's grey) but we never call him that.

#6 - Tia, runt of a litter I was fostering, she needed a tiny name since she
was the smallest.  Fell in love w/her and kept her.

#7 - Mama Zoo - another foster failure - she was a nursing mom somebody
dumped at my local zoo.  They took her to the shelter, and one of the
shelter workers called her ZooZoo.  I started calling her Mama Zoo, I didn't
expect to keep her, and by the time it was decided she would stay I couldn't
think of another name.  My dad calls her "Foo Foo"

#8 - Bobby - another foster failure, they named him at the shelter.  I've
been calling him Robert, Bob, Ralph and Wobbles - again didn't think he'd be
staying, now used to calling him Bob.  Once again, another cat
w/neurological problems, not as bad as Stumbles, but noticable.

After three foster failures, will I still foster?  Yes, but no more adults,
I feel too bad for them and end up keeping them.  Only orphans from now on,
just gave up four yesterday and cried! :)

I've got three dogs too but I'll spare going thru anymore names!  :)

Why do you call them foster failures?  Sounds like foster "successes"
becuase you saved them being put to sleep.

The shelter calls me a "foster failure" - a success is one who successfully
fosters and can part with them after.  Anf for the record it's a no kill
shelter, I could never foster for one that puts them to sleep, I would end
up keeping way too many!  And don't get me wrong, I'm proud to be a foster
failure, and the shelter is thrilled too!  :)  Except at 7 cats and 3 dogs I
have to stop somewhere!

Loved reading everyone's. :)

I love the idea of having themes and for now, ours is basically just having typical people names.

My oldest "kitty" (hehe) is Maddie. She is 18 and the reason we named her shows her age. My dad brought her home from a litter and at the time our family watched Moonlighting with Bruce Willis and Cybil Sheppard. Cybil Sheppard's character was named Maddie, or Maddy, we just ended up spelling it with the ie. I just liked the name. :)

Our other kitty is about 1 1/2. Her name is Jane. We got her from the humane society a few months ago and her name was Kitters. That name was just ringing with kids naming her that and hubby and I just aren't into those kinds of names. I just liked the name Jane always, and it fits because she is a grey striped tabby which, to me, is almost a too common cat so I think "Plain Jane" or "Jane Doe". We've got some nicknames for her. My hubby called her Spawn of Satan for a while because she harrassed the dog and Maddie A LOT when she first moved in. Now we joke and call her Spawn sometimes. Then I will also call her Little Jane cause she is still small compared to Maddie or I will call her Jane Hobbs when she is laying out cause it reminds me of Calvin and Hobbs with the long cat that looks stretchy.

Anyway! I'll shut up now. LOL :)

> What is/are your cat(s) names and how did you come up with them?

We have one cat called Caspa that was named after Casper the friendly ghost.
She's gray and used to shadow DH a lot as a kitten so he named her that.

Our new kitten is a Bengal and we read they have as much energy as Tigger in
Winnie the Pooh so we're naming it Tigga (with the A so it matches Caspa
with an A)

So both of our cats are named after cartoon characters and both of them have
names deliberately modified to end with an A simply because we like it
better that way.
Alan Sandoval - 08 Feb 2004 06:30 GMT

I always name my pets after TV characters.  My previous cat was named 'Spot'
after the cat the Data character had on Star Trek, Next Generation.  My
current cat is named 'Willow' after the character on Buffy the Vampire
Slayer.  Willow happens to be mostly orange, and my former girlfriends'
parents live next door to Allysin Hannigan, the red-headed 'Willow'
character on Buffy.

Stupid, huh?  I once had a dog named Caprice, after the minor celibrity,
Tina Wayne on the obscure TV show, Camp Runamok.
Dawn - 09 Feb 2004 04:43 GMT
Saturday when I called the vet to get Toast's test results (which still
aren't in) they couldn't remember what name they had put her under since she
didn't have a name at the time.  So after that search I recommended they
update the file with her name.  When she heard I had named her Toast she
laughed so hard she dropped the phone and had to tell three other people
before she was able to calm down enough to change the file.  She said the
funny thing is that she didn't remember which cat Toast was till she heard
the name.

Before I was born my parents took in a kitten which was the offspring of a
half-feral rescue cat. She was called "Fang". When she later had six kittens
of her own, they kept one, she was named "Olga" after the Russian gymnast
Olga Korbut.

I now have two cats called Smokey and Smudge. Smokey is a "smokey" grey
colour all over, hence the name. Smudge is a tabby with some white "smudges"
on her back. It also helps that both names begin with "sm" which links the
names together, as they are both from the same litter.

When I was at school our bearded Scottish English teacher (he was Scottish,
taught English), had two cats called "Ethnic Minority*" and "Bastard?",
although I gather he had some nicer names for them as well

=# Amos E Wolfe #=

*due to being black
?due to being a "bastard" as all animals technically are

I have Marquette, I named her after the town (Marquette, Iowa) I found her
in while on vacation. And I have Graycie Mae. She is a gray tabby and
southern born and bred...so she needed a 'southern'  name.
