Liver Problems?

I adopted another cat (#4) last week from a local animal control facility.
She is a lovely Himalayan mix. Part of the adoption agreement was I had to
take her to "their" vet to be fixed. I was a little nervous about this and
was willing to pay to have her taken to my vet but they wouldn't budge. So
Wednesday she was fixed and they called to tell me they had noticed a lump
and while they were fixing her they went in and that one of the lobes of her
liver is enlarged. So they had taken a tissue sample and wanted approval to
send it off. Of course I said yes. They suggested it could be "a lot of
things" but most likely is a bacterial infection and sent us home with an
antibiotic and were told to wait for the results. Oh yeah they will take
7-10 business days. And P.S. she can't be around your other cats till we get
the results.

Anyone else had any kitties with liver problems?

My biggest hope is that this was just their way of running up the bill (what
was supposed to be a $25 spaying now included $7 for special stitches, $20
for the tissue sample, $30 for the extra night at the vet, and $77 to send
off for the biopsy).

My biggest fear is that whatever she has in not curable and that she will
never be allowed around other cats in which case I will have to find another
home for her (as of now she is exiled to my bedroom which has very much
upset the one cat that usually sleeps with me every night).

As for now she eats and drinks well, seems to recognize the litter box.
Loves to be petted and groomed (good thing cause the daily visits with the
brush has done her coat a world of good). And has decided the antique quilt
on my bed makes a much better place to sleep then the towel on the floor.

We are thinking of naming her Toast (as her ears, face, tail, and paws look
toasted).

TIA,

Dawn and Pounce, Blade, Jazz, and "Toast"

Im very surprised that the shelter isn't taking care of the bill for this
sort of thing, if they are insisting that they use their vet, they should be
paying the bill.  Talk to them about it, as Im sure your adoption agreement
has something about the cat being healthy.

Liver issues aren't uncommon.  Hopefully it will be something easily
manageable.  Good luck

The liver problem could be mild and nothing to worry about.  Hard to say
until results come back.  If she does have liver disease she could possibly
live a long life, depending on the "stage" and how far progressed it is.  A
special diet may help.  As long as she continues to eat and is healthy,
that's good.  I lost mine this past July due to liver disease, but he was 15
years old and by the time we caught it there wasn't much left to do.  I
don't want to upset you, this may not be the case with your cat, she could
live the ripe age of 20!

The shelter probably didn't catch it because she's not showing any signs or
symptoms.  Call them and see what their policy is on sick pets, maybe they
will re-imburse you some of the additional cost.

Good luck!
