Sabrina's Mom - 23 Jan 2004 13:44 GMT
Took Sabrina in for her annual and to renew rabies/vaccines and when
the Vet came in, it dawned on her who Sabrina was and because of the
type of cancer removed, she's hesitant to vaccinate.

Sabrina is purely an indoor cat, although we do have the dog who is up
to date on all her shots (as of yesterday) who goes outside all the
time.

She is going to check with some colleges to get their oppinion, but
the opinion she has now is to pass on future vaccines for Sabrina, or
maybe go to a 5 yr plan.   Anything to help reduce the trama and
possible reoccurance of the cancer.

Sabrina was happy about that.   :)

I'm sure she is very aware of that.   The article does not go into any
detail about the cancer that can develope from vaccines.

Sabrina lost her front right leg, and shoulder this past fall from
cancer and what she had was the same type of cancer that develops from
vaccines in some cats.   Although in Sabrina's case it wasn't vaccine
related, and it had spread to her bone.

Since she has this history, which means she now probably has the gene
in her system, then my vet's concern is that possibly future vaccines
could cause a reoccurance.   In an effort to keep those down she is
going to discuss with her colleges and see if maybe we just go to a 5
yr rabies shot or something like that.

Sabrina is now 8 yrs old, she's had all the original shots and I've
kept her up to date on the annuals in the years I've had her.  My vet
has had her in care since she was a kitten (with her previous owner).

Believe me, I'm not one to skimp on routine visits and vaccines, but
in the case of Sabrina, I'd like to prolong her life, not risk
shortening it.  :)  This is one of those cases where not vacinating
may prolong her life.

And that's what I tried to communicate. If you read the vaccination
schedule, they advocate only a couple of vaccines for indoor-only cats
and then only once every 3 years (which is how long the vaccine lasts).
Our cats all follow their recommendations.
