2 Kittens....at war

Well, about a week ago, we went to the SPCA and picked up a kitten, cute wee
thing was about 8 weeks old. Obviously 9 weeks old now, hes a playful wee
thing. So, I decided maybe I should get another kitten, a little playfriend
for him, we got another male kitten, just tonight in fact. Now, we spoke to
a vet, about getting 2 kittens at the same time...males...she said they
should be ok, as long as we neuter both of them at 5 mths old, they wont
tear each other to pieces.

When we introduced the two kittens together, the first kitten decided to
give the new kitten a bit of a swot around the head....and then some, seems
hes quite a strong wee thing. Now, my first thoughts are....ok, hes just
feeling territorial...new male...just playing around, it'll all calm down
within a few days, once they know each other. But, in the back of my
mind...I'm thinking....what if they dont calm down? What if the first kitten
proceeds to constantly beat the new kitten to a pulp on a regular basis?

Am I just being paranoid? Will they calm down? Have I made a huge mistake? I
would love some feedback from people with past experience

Thanks

kittens at that age may technically be male, but there haven't been any
hormones released in the system, so they really are gender neutral.  The
kittens are just playing around, which can seem pretty violent if your not
used to it.   no need to worry unless one of the kittens starts to cower
away from the other.

you also don't really have to worry about the cat being territorial at this
point.. too young, and he hasn't been in your house that long.

No, they wont calm down for a couple of years.  My little (ok, she's not
little any more she's 10 lbs) still "beats up" on her brother (barely 9 lbs)
and they are just over a year. the only one in my five that doesn't get into
an occasional row is my eldest who is 13

my advice, keep the nails trimmed, and only break up the blood curdling
screaming fights with a stern NO.

Good luck!!

We went through the same thing.  In fact our first kitten had a decided
age and size advantage on the new kitten.  It seemed brutal at first,
but there was never any injuries or 'screams' from the little one.  We
noticed, however, that more often than not, it WAS THE LITTLE GUY
starting it.  They still play rough, but are obvious buddies that keep
each other entertained.  The following pictures kind of tell the story:

They'll be ok, just give them time. Kittens adjust very well to new comers.
