Three.  I have two, one male, one female.  I brought in a third cat
on an emergency basis, the female acted like she was on the
enterprise and the klingons just beamed on board.

I would have thought she would be happy that I took in an
abandoned cat who needed a home.  Nope.  She wasn't
a happy camper.

its because you brought a stray into the house.. cats are very territorial,
and they have no communication skills, so you couldn't explain to your
resident cat what was going on.    Three is not the magic number, it was how
you did it that was the problem

Well, you've gotten some good responses already.  My first thought was that
even one is clearly too many for some, and others seem to be limited only by
their available resources of space, time, and money.  The only productive
comment I have to offer is that it makes a lot of difference whether they
are littermates, or whether you are introducing new cats into your
household.

I'm the same; I spend a lot of time at the local Cats Protection shelter
(www.cats.org.uk) where I adopted my gorgeous Missy from, and it's so sad
to see them in their pens. Too many people only seem to want kittens, when
there are so many older cats with so much love to give.

They are *extremely* well looked after there though, and there's a strict
no kill policy :-)  There's one poor soul there at the moment with brain
damage, amongst other things he has trouble keeping his tongue in his
mouth, but he's *so* sweet and deserves more.

I'd adopt 'em all too, if I could...

If i could take him I would.  I'm all the way in Canada though and it would
probably cost an arm and a leg to get him here.  Poor kitty.

I had Two dogs (Keeshonds) and three cats at one time and found that to
be quite enough.
It was very entertaining we all used to go to the park at the end of the
block ... everyone toodling along.

We are animal free at the moment but working on two kittens and that's
going to be it ;)

We had 8 until last week.  One had to be put down when
she got FeLeuk.  I will not replace her and just go on
attrition.  8 was too much so I will try to take it back down
to 4 or 5 by attrition.

I can't give enough proper attention and love to 8.
