Isis does many things which perplex me. One that always makes me crazy is
when she lies on her back, looks at me, and makes funny noises.

I know I am upside down to her at this point. Her eyes get glazey and I
believe she is in a yogic trance of some sort.

Of course, being human, I ask "why". Why would a cat want to do this? What
is the joy of looking at things upside down?

Do your guys' cats ever do this?

Thank you.

She is inviting you to play -- and when  put your hand down to pet
her, she will probably grab it and "kill" it.

That's something my Missy does on a regular basis, she rolls over on her
back with her paws in the air with a "I'm so sexy come and get me" look
(!) then when I attempt to tickle her belly she grabs me and digs her
claws in..!

The thing is, I *know* she's going to do this but I try and tickle her
anyway ;-))

I think they all do this.  Mine talk to me.  They'll make urrrping noises
until I do reach down my hand and pet em.  My male makes urrrping noises all
the time.   We'll touch him when he's sleeping and he'll urrp.. or well talk
to him and he'll urrrp, or we'll walk behind him and he'll urrrp.  In our
old house he used to urrrp going down the stairs.  In our new place no
stairs.

I think you are all correct. I commend you for your bravery. It doesn't take
Isis long to get into that mode where she grabs my fleshy hand with her
front paws and does the 'rip 'n tear' dance with those buzzsaw rear legs.
You guys know what I'm talking about.

This 'invitation to play' has sinister overtones, no?

Poor Missy, you seem tough to train!

Mike We had a female cat also called Isis that used to lay on her back
alot of the time and seem to like her stomach rubbed. Isis died in
1995 at seveteen years old. We now have a female cat that lays on her
back all the time and I think she does it because she knows that we
will pay attention to her.   Male cats that we have had over the years
don't seem to do this very often.

I thought my cats did it because it gets an "Awww" response because they
look so silly.  I have heard that showing their belly is a sign they want
attention or trust you (though not necessarily that they want their bellies
rubbed -- some cats love this some cats hate it).

1 out of 10 times Isis will enjoy having her stomach massaged. The other 9
times it is like juggling scorpions.
