Sabrina's Mom - 04 Jan 2004 20:27 GMT
Well, I'm at a loss.   BF is in a total tizzy.    Sabrina was laying on the
couch today and must have gotten up in a startle of some sort as she left
behind 6 really bad scratches and holes in our new leather couches (less
than 1 yr old and not even paid for yet).   BF is in a tirade right now, and
I've come in to research to see if there is 'anything' we can do to fix
this, or Sabrina is about to be sent off....

I'm at a loss.

I can't help with the leather, but you can prevent future accidents if you
trim Sabrina's claws every few weeks.  It does sound like something startled
or frightened Sabrina and that it was an accident.  You would have a lot
more scratches than that if she had done it deliberately -- so please be
forgiving (in the same way that parents understand their children's
accidental damage).

Is the cat being blamed for something someone else did?

I hate to sound like spam but try this:

I would suggest getting rid of the BF before getting rid of the cat.

Are you sure the scratches/holes are from the cat?

Well, we won't be getting rid of either of them.   We LOVE Sabrina dearly.
Although I have had to make a promise to never ask to bring another animal
into the house.

Have you ever used that liquid leather - does it really work?   I'm always
hesitant of the "as seen on tv" gimmicks.

> Are you sure the scratches/holes are from the cat?

Unfortunately yes, They are definately cat scratches.   We left and she was
sleeping in that very spot on the couch.   The dog was in her crate and when
we returned the scratches were there.   And being that the dog is 1.  50lbs,
much larger than a cat, hence larger paws and certainly larger than the
scratches reveal, 2.  has her nails trimmed and filed regularly and 3.  does
not get up on the furniture, never mind the fact that she is crated when we
are not at home.

It was Sabrina.    Also, Sabrina uses her back claws all the time now,
especially since she's had the front leg amputated, its her way of getting
extra balance.  believe me, my legs have the scars.   I try to trim her
nails, but she HATES that with a huge passion.  (worse than trying to give
her a pill).   But they do get trimmed abotu once a month.   If it weren't
for the fact that she is usually sleeping on my lap while on the couch, I'm
sure we'd have alot more of these scratches.   But its my legs that bare the
scars instead.  :-)

Question: who gets a *leather* couch with a cat in the house?

I do.   I prefer the look of it.   And considering we didn't have a problem
w/ her on our old fabric couch (BTW, fabric tends to pull or snag if a claw
gets caught in it).   But that stuff was old and looked crappy.

Ya know, I'm more concerned with ideas on how to possibly repair the couch
as apposed to dealing with the cat.   Sabrina is queen of this house, and we
won't be able to stop her from cuddling with us or on the couch.   That's
just one of those things.

Then hie thee to a leather sofa dealer and ask how they
repair theirs.

That's BF's job to deal with.  :-)

My cats prefer to sleep on spread out newspapers on the couch.  You
might try that.

Thanks,

I've spread out a large Mexican wool blanket onto the couch for now.
Its folded in half so it should be thick enough to deter some of the
scratching.

Get ride (I mean RID) of the BF.  Accidents happen -=- it was not a
deliberate thing -- and if  he can't accept that, you don't need him.
Who knows, he might be the kind who would "take it out" upon a child
if it were the cause.

check your yellow pages to see if there are leather workers who might
know of a repair job that can be made.

PUH - LEEZE...  Get rid of the BF.   What kind of suggestion is that?
"take it out upon a child"...  what kind of idiot do you take me for?

Yes, it was an accident.   yes he realizes that.   But I (and I'm sure many
others) can understand the anger at having a very expensive piece of
furniture destroyed by a cat.  (albiet accidental).     Sabrina was not even
around when he found the scratches, she was sleeping in a sunbeam in the
bathroom.   BF is not abusive.    Angry at the damage, yes.  Abusive.  NO.

That is exactly what I've done.   I'll also be calling the store we bought
the furniture at and ask who they use in this kind of situation.  I'll get
it repaired.

Excuse me?  destroyed?? you have a couple of scratch marks in it.. worn
leather is much more attractive than new leather any day.  I can understand
Sabrina's issues if she is declawed.. Might I recommend keeping the couch
covered from now on  if you don't like that lived in look.

Sabrina was declawed by her previous owner.   But now she is only 3 pawed!
after cancer took her front right leg in september.

I hope she recovers nicely.
I'm not too sure about the leather repair - I have used it on my dashboard
and the results were... um... homemade-looking at best?  Kinda like spackle.
As far as covering the couch so that further mishaps are avoided, I cover my
cushions with more leather.  I bought some nice soft thick leather that
matched my decor and left the edges raggedy (I have a rustic, ecclectic look
in my living room.  I thought at first that I would remove the leather when
company came over, but I like how it looks now, so I just leave it.  My
couch is not leather - my couch is red velvet - and lots of folks wondered
why I would buy a velvet couch with a cat.  Told them to mind their own
business.  Three years later - no tears yet.  The fur sticks a little
though - I just use a roller-type pet hair/lint remover.  If you do decide
to use the liquid leather repair stuff, be very careful - it is really hard
to work with and the little iron-thingy that comes with it - it tends to
squish the liquid stuff and make it look like a patch, so don't use too much
of the liquid and don't press too hard with the iron-thingy.
Good luck with it.

Jen,   What a great idea on the leather on leather!  Thanks!  (and
"duh, why didn't I think of that")

I think we will have someone come and repair this instead of trying it
on our own.   It would be one thing if it were in a more inconspicuous
spot, but these scratches are smack dab in the center of the center
cushion of the large sofa.

Some little "cuts" began to appear in the leather of my car.  In my case, it
was because of 115,000 miles of use.  I talked to the dealer, and he gave me
the name of the people they use for leather repair.  I haven't had it done
yet, but something like that might help you -- that is, talk to businesses
where that have to have professional repairs done, and get references for
reliable repairs.  Another possibility would be the store where you bought
your chair.  They might have some suggestions.  Of course, any of this could
be costly.  Next, how about placing a soft pad on one corner of the sofa.
Sabrina might sleep there and "save" the rest of your sofa.
