I have a male cat that has always hunted and killed the mice and rats
around my neighborhood, but lately I've been a little concerned...not
only is he killing the rodents, he's mutilating them.

The last two victims were found like this....one was decapitated and
the guts ripped out, the other one's leg was ripped off and the meat
chewed away and the breast bone and rib cage torn from the body ending
up in the same state as the leg. I know that if you give dogs raw meat
they will get a taste for it, and go bizzerk, but is the same
happening to my cat?

It's really odd, he's the most lovable cat I have and for him to act
like this is weird. Any comments, suggestions or advise would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
  Sarah

my cousins cat did this to a nest of baby birds once, I think he's just being
a cat.

Your cat is just being a normal feline. Preditors usually start
consuming the prey's insides first because they are the most
nutritious. There is nothing wrong with this behaviour. For the
domestic cat rodents are part of their natural diet If he is actinging
very excited during this practice it is because is extremely proud of
himself.

Feeding him more won't stop him. I have 3 cats all of which are fed an
ample amount of food. One of them just loves catching rats and mice
and devours them from tip to tail. This is what they spent millions of
years evolving to do.

By the way, I suspect that the giving dogs raw meat and boing bizzerk
is an old wife's tale...but that is just my opinion!

My neighbor had the same problem, only his cat used a jeweled dagger and
wore a black cowl with runes embroidered on it. ;-)
