Sabrina's Mom - 01 Dec 2003 01:53 GMT
I don't know how it happened, but I have a sneaking suspision the dog might
have been involved....

The story.

This morning in our area of the world (southern florida) we had lows in the
low 40's  (that's COLD for us).   But because of the cool weather we had our
bedroom slider door open a bit to allow the cool air in while we slept.
This also meant my dear Sabrina cuddled as close as possible to me all night
long.    Its not unusual for us to leave the slider open.  Actually, the
slider has a cat door in it so Sabrina can get onto the lania if the door is
shut.   Her litter is out there, and so is the pool.   She's always
preferred to drink out of the pool than out of any water dish in the house.
Thankfully we do not have to chlorinate our pool much at all.     Anyhow, in
the 4 yrs we've had her, this has never been a problem.

Well, about 7:30am this morning I am woken up to this wet shaking noise.
My first thought is the dog had gotten ahold of something (ya know that dog
shake thing they do to toys ....).   I look over the side of the bed to see
the dog sitting there, and wet spots on the rug.   I look outside and think
"oh crap, Chloe must have gotten a frog that had gotten into the lania and
into the pool."   I get out of bed and look underneath expecting to find a
little tree frog or something, only to see Sabrina there, soaking wet.   I
pulled her out, wrapped her in a towel, then climbed back into bed and put
the covers over us.  (afterall, since the door was open it was about 58
degrees in the house.)   The pool was 75 the other day, until we got this
cold front, and it dropped down to about 65 over night.

We cuddled for a while so she could warm up,   I could tell she was quite
upset about it, and after a few minutes she started hacking and she puked up
her breakfast on me.  (well, thankfull on the towel, not me).

My poor baby.    I kept her warm and then we went into the bathroom where
the sunbeam was shinging in, I opened the shade, put a rug in the middle of
the sunbeam and she laid down and rested there for a couple hours.)

I don't know what spooked her to make her fall in.    Although she has been
a bit tippy on her front leg lately, i think her weight and the 3 legs is
getting to her.    Also, we havent' had rain in ages, so the pool is low, so
she had to lean extra far in to get her drink.

On one hand, I'm sure I'll now be filling up the inside water bowls alot
more often now, I'm sure it will be a long time before she ventures near the
edge of the pool again.

Poor baby.

Poor baby is right.  I wonder how she got out?   I hope you can
convince her water bowls are best.  Perhaps a Petsmate fountain would
interest her.    Anyway, I'm glad we finally had a Sabrina report --
only not about a dip in the drink.  Best wishes   MLB

Well, the odd part was - the top of her head wasn't wet...  so she didn't go
all the way under.   She drinks right by the stairs, (we have a large
stairwell, and ledges for seats around the edges of the pool).   So she
probably just jumped right out.

Otherwise, Sabrina is doing very well.   She is still licking the fur off
her belly and the sides that were shaven.   We've tried a new litter to see
if maybe its the litter causing her to lick (after I got some advice from a
co-worker who had a cat doing the same thing, turned out to be a reaction to
the litter).   If all else fails, I'll probably have to put her back on some
anti-anxiety pills so that her hair will grow.

Besides that, she is getting around just fine, defends and stands up for
herself w/ the dog and even starts in w/ the dog herself at times.  :)
(she's got spunk).

When she needs to run, she hops like a rabbit.  Her appetite has been
feroucious lately.   We have to be careful that she doesn't gain weight -
she's 14lbs now, and all that weight with only 1 front paw has me worried.
but we've stopped giving her "diet" food (in the 4 yrs I've had her she
didn't lose weight on the diet food, even at less than 1/2 cup of food a
day).   I'd rather see her happy and content with food than eathing the
stuff she hates.

I don't have any updated photos for the website - because she is still
missing most her fur over the surgery site (from her licking it off).  But
the scar is fully healed now.   That's about it for an update on my baby.
She is a big baby...  :)

Thank you MLB and TuTu.   Sabrina thanks you too.    She's cuddled up on my
pillow just waiting for me to come to bed.   cold nights mean lots of
snuggles.

Iknow this is an old letter, but I was unable to use my computer
for quite a long time. I was wondering, your dog was wet
too, is it possible that the dog helped Sabrina out of the pool?
Ihad a Lab; when I got a kitten, the dog was an adult dog, but the two
fell instantly in love, the dog * Ralph* took Zac under his wing
chased all other cats away from himand taught him eventually how to
take care of himself. If Zac had fallen into a pool,Ralph would certainly
have rescued him.Unfortunately, Ralph died when Zac was two
years old, he was eleven and a half, I think Zac couldnt face life
without Ralph, and six months later, he died too in exactly the
same way Jean P.

Chloe (the dog) wasn't wet.  What I'd noticed was that there was wet spots
all over the floor leading under the bed.  At first I thought Chloe had/was
chasing a frog or something as sometimes we get frogs in the pool cage area.
But nope, it was poor Sabrina.

It has been awhile and Sabrina still won't drink out of the pool, and now
only drinks out of her water dish.  4+ yrs of having her and she is finally
drinking out of a water dish.  :)

LOL...  Oh, I know we shouldn't laugh, as our kitties faced trauma from
this.   But you almost can't help but giggle.

when my cat Henri RB was neuteredhe was seven months
old, and Ralph [the dog] had taught him to drink out of the toilet
I laid him on the bottom of my bed as he was still groggy, and
when I went to to check on him he was soaking wet, I panicked
thinking he was running a high temperature, till I saw the toilet
floor and realised he'd gone for a drink and fallen in   Jean P.

Ok it was just a thought as I thought you said the dog was wet,
Its funny you know Wilson doesn't drink out of the water bowls
I put down all over the place, he jumps in the bath tub every time
I go in there and sits waiting for me to put a plastic tumbler of water
full to the brim in the bath beside him he'll drink that, but the water
bowls around the house are never touched. Glad to hear Sabrina is doing well
anyway sending some hugs to her. Jean P. and Wilson.

Poor Sabrina I wonder how she got out?
maybe the dog helped her?that may be
how he was involved. Anyway I hope her
leg is coming on well and not incapacitating
her too much. regards  J.P.
