Hello,
I just got a 6 month old male orange tabby cat who is a sweet heart. He
hardly ever stops purring. He loves my husband and I alot. I just have to
find out something about him. He will jump up on the bed and want attention
then he licks our fingers and chews on them. Why does he do this? Is he
teething? If he is teething any advice on what I can to help him not chew
on us? I have long fingernails and don't want him to chip the paint on them
and get sick. I am very concerned for him. Any advice would be
appreciated.
Thank you,
Angela

My 9 year old Missy does this sometimes, I don't know why, either..! Can't
help with the long fingernails problem though ;-)

Yes, the kitty is teething, but he also does it because it gets your
attention. React when he chews your fingers, the same way you would do when
he does something else you don't want him to do. Say no, and redirect him
into something else. Do not reward him with love and attention, it will
just encourage him to continue

My 11 yr, old tabby does that
too. All you can do is either
hit her VERY LIGHTLY on that
tiny nose when she does it or
scold her for doing it and when
she learns, you might give her
a treat of her favorite thing.
As for the long fingernails,
I wish I had them!!!!!!

NEVER HIT A CAT!!!!!!! NEVER! There are so many other things you can do, but
advising hitting a live creature is really ridiculous, violent and
considered animal abuse. So please forget this advice. Hitting an animal
will only cause it pain, it may cause it to dissapear for good, and will
NEVER produce the desired result, only to be scared of you. And what kind of
relationship will you have then?
I will post in a separate posting my suggestion how to deal with this.

He's probably teething. Beats the heck out of my why anyone would want to
have long painted fingernails in the first place, but if this works for you,
perhaps wearing gloves to bed will be a solution.

I am not 100% certain why cats lick us, I read somewhere it could do with
either cleaning us up to their standards, or to lick the salt of our skin.
My Tigger usually does it just after he wakes up, so it could be some
instinctive feeling.I don;t know for sure. My QT used to love to lick my
nose, and only nose. Go figure. I let them do what they want, but do make
sure you wash afterwards as cats mouth contain lots of germs.
As for chewing, yes it is most likly teething, but not nececerily. Tigger
also likes to chew on people's toes, although he is 3yrs old. The way to
deal with it is really to simply scream when he hurt you. Really loudly and
in as high pitched tone as you can do. Cats hate high pitched loud noises,
therefore will stop doing what thery are and look at you in shock. As soon
as they stop biting, you stop screaming, and give them praise. You will need
to repeat this each and every time he bites/chews. He will soon associate
noise with chewing and naturallly stop doint it.It will take less then a
week to train him, that's my promise. I've done this on all my 5
kitties, and they have NEVER bitten anyone and Tigger only chews on my toes
gently, becuase I let him really.
NEVE HIT AN ANIMAL like someone here suggested!

Lol...Cat's can be funny little creatures. I agree that you're cat may very
well be teething...however...when I have long nails...my cat tries to chew
them. I just have to put my finger under her nose and she rubs her face on
my finger and then tries to bite my nails. It may be incurable...too bad you
fancy your nails so much. lol
Oh...and an alternate method of training...as I see here someone has advised
you to lightly hit your cat...what bull!! Try having a spray bottle with
some water in it. One squirt of that and your cat will be running quickly in
the other direction. Eventually the cat will learn that biting
fingers...means getting wet...they hate that.
Hope this has helped!

I've got natural long nails (my own, not fake) and have never had a
problem with the polish coming off because of the cat or the dog
chewing on the nails. One of the ways I can get my dog to let me
trim her nails is to let her chew on mine while I trim hers (she's
got this obsessive/compulsive need to chew her own nails and when I
trim them for her she tries to chew mine).
Sabrina likes to lick my hand - especially if there's food or even
handcream/lotion on them. Both my animals LOVE the taste of
moisturizers. Sabrina licks - doesn't chew much, but will lick my
hand and push my nails into the corners of her mouth or head so I'll
scratch her.
Animals love peoiple with long nails - they get a good scratching that
way and they love it.

Wash your hands... and don't put moisturizer on them.
