im not kidding! at least, its the best one my cat ever had:
a simple drinking straw!
take one and bend it up a bit, then dangle it around until kitty
starts swatting at it, then toss it across the room. he'll play
with it for hours. I give him a new one every day and he never
gets sick of it, and I've been doing this every day for the past
month or so =) [I admit it, im a fast food junkie..] He'll even
pull a new straw right out of my bk large size soda if I leave
the cup on my desk unattended, he just loves a fresh straw
with no teeth-holes in it :)

I'm definitly testing out the straws :)
My best cat toy ever bought was bought from a pet shop here, and it is
basically a peace of bendy thin wire and at the end there are bits of
cardboard attached in the shape of little sausiges. Once the wire starts
moving all they see is the cardboard flying around, possibly reminding them
of flies, therefore they can chase it forever!

That is the Cat Dancer. TuTu loves hers too. She will drag it around
the house and bring it to me to coax me to play with her. MLB

The Best Cat Toys in our house are a couple of things. The Cat knot is a
piece of material tied in a knot with cat nip in it. They love that one.
You know those ribbons gymnast use for the floor routine? We have one here
and the cats love it. They play with that. Our Male loves Pen Caps. He
just goes nuts for em. We also have little stuff animals you win at the
carnival games. They carry those around and we had a Cat Dancer and they
loved that too.

My Missy just loves a simple piece of string with a few knots tied in it to
give her claws some grip..! Trouble is I'm not always fast enough and my
hands get caught a lot, looks like I've been in a knife fight sometimes..!
Now where did I put those welding gloves..?!

watch out for thin pieces of string, they can get eaten and lodged in the
body requiring surgery and/or making your cat quite sick. take it from
experience!

That's ok, I never leave it around when I'm not playing with her :-)

Our cat loves those milk jug rings. She carries them like they are her
babies.

My last cat loved those too! They don't seem like they would be very
interesting, but cats just love them.
