Sudden pee!

We have two adolescent cats, Moomin (a tom) and Fudge (a queen). Both
are very clean, and have, since being small kittens, always used a
litter tray.

Then, tonight, we kept smelling an awful, rotten sort of smell. We
traced it to the sofa, at the side of the cushions. Am I right in
thinking that because it smelt so strong, it was probably Moomin?
However, it wasn't like he had sprayed (I don't imagine): when we took
all the cushions off, we saw that this was a huge amount of pee. It
looked really as if whichever cat it was had just peed while lying on
the sofa, maybe in his or her sleep. But that goes totally against their
behaviour. Could it be a sign that one of them is ill?

In short .... what's going on?!?!

Has Moomin been neutered?  An unneutered tom can have very powerful spray.
And, yes, this could be a medical problem (urinary tract infection).  In
fact, that is the very first thing to check for when a cat suddenly starts
to urinate outside the litter box.  A visit to the vet is in order ASAP
(because untreated UTI can be very serious, even fatal).

Thanks for that, Mary. Moomin hasn't been neutered (yet!). What does a
tom-cat's spray smell like? This was a very strong, musty sort of smell.
Quite hard to describe really, but it was extremely pungent!

Acting on your advice, we're taking him and Fudge to the vets today. So
thanks again.

Best Wishes,

Irish

Good, and please talk to the vet about neutering.  This now sounds like it
could be spraying (but you need to rule out UTI).  The cat should be
neutered as soon as possible -- usually much better if it is done before he
starts spraying.  Your description of a very pungent odor certainly sounds
like spraying.

It could be behavioral or it could be a urinary tract infection (UTI).
Take them both to the vet unless you are sure which one it was.

At this point assume nothing except that the cat needs to go
to the vet.

First step is take the cat to the vet and rule out a medical
problem.
