hi all

looking for any advice.... i currently have a female cat, 7 years old....
her sister died about three years ago, and since then, we've become pretty
close (my wife, her and i) and we hang out often, she sleeps with us, wants
to be around us etc...the attention is great and we love our cat bigtime.

a friend's cat had babies around 7 or 8 weeks ago, and we're thinking of
getting one.  our only concern is screwing up the amazing temperament of
the cat we have now.  we'd only get another female kitten, which my friend
says is cute, a little sucky, but by no means a runt.

i was wondering what people think might happen to my current cat and our
relationship with her.  despite growing up with her sister for the first
four years, she doesn't take kindly to other cats when they come to our
door etc (our cat is an indoor kitty).

any advice?

thanks!

In my experience, most cats enjoy having another cat to play with. There
are exceptions, of course. And it might take a long time for your old
cat to adjust to a kitten. I'd say give it a go, but don't be despaired
if it takes a long time for your cat to adjust. It took our Xoxo almost
a year to finally mix with the girls properly.

Besides the outside cats I am trying to keep fed, I have 10 of my own.
I started with one (doesn't everyone?), and got a second to keep her
company. They didn't take to each other. They got to the point after a
few months where they tolerated each other but never became buddies. I
think though, that they each appreciated the other cat being around.
Just comfortable to see one of their own kind. All of their
personalities are so different. I have 2 who are brothers and have
grown up together for 5 years who fight like cats and dogs, as they
say. I have had to pull them apart a few times. Others who didn't like
each other at first now cuddle with each other all the time. A kitten
would absolutely be best. Another adult cat may be more threatening to
the first. A baby is not seen as a threat. It's a hard call to make
but (if I didn't have 10 now) I would always try to bring another in.
I am at my limit in terms of the expense I can handle. I can't bring
any of the outside cats in. I just try to keep them fed, but my own
have to come first. But if I had just one all over again, I would look
for company for him/her. Even if all they do is lay across the room
from and look at each other.

I always advocate getting additional cats..

Just be sure to follow all the rules when it comes to introducing a kitten
to your cat, and keep in mind that the slower you go, the easier it is for
your resident cat.
