Well really, any cat desease can be transmitted from one to another. I do
hope your older is vaccinated for the main deseases. If there is a chance
keep them separated for 3-4 days, just so you can notice any symptoms on a
new kitten if he is ill(cross fingers not)
>if I'm not careful, I realize I should bring the new kitty to the vet as
soon as possible.
Yes, asap, so it can be treated for fleas first, and cheked over for general
stuff. Also depending on kittens age, they might start it with vaccinations,
If I can remember correctly the first one is at 9 weeks and second at 12
weeks old.
>>Has anyone ever had any of these problems, getting one cat sick becuase of
a newcomer.
Yeah, I had a major flea infestatin when the stray Charlie moved himself in,
and I fullishly didn;t act fast enough. All 4 started scratching soon
enough, and I had to wait for the weekend, have them all done at the same
time, then spend 2 days cleaning the house, washing absolutely every peace
of clothes and linen, spray the carpets with some expensive(but brilliant
and so worth it) flea spray from the vets, etc. It was one helluva job, but
we killed the bustar## fleas!
>What other measures should i take while introducing
> them to one another?
Since one is a kitten, you dont; need to really do much. Animals are
fabulous in a sense to know when to stop when it comes to treating
youngsters. The older one might teach little one a lesson but don;t worry it
will kill it or hurt it or anything such. My Shaddow used to swing the front
right paw high up in the air, just the ways humans would, then slap QT and
Tigger right across the floor! But they both seem to have enjoyed this(go
figure) and kept going back for more, probably thinking: wow she is a good
fun! Swing me again! Do overlook them though, but try not to interfiere in
anything. Just let them to get on with it. It might take 3 days or 4 weeks,
but they will learn to live together either in love, or just putting up with
each other. Shaddow and QT became soulmates dispite the ruff start, (and
QT's death sent Shaddow into a huge depression, like you wouldn;t believe).
Remember they are just strangers now, but they will learn to adjust.
Best advice I can give you to ease up the process for your older cat, as
cats are after all very territorial and having a nerw kid on the block will
not be welcomed, is this:BRIBE! Whenever the little one is around give the
older one LOTS of treats. Basically you will form a positive association
that presence of this newcomer means more munchies. Once they are settled
you can stop this bribery, but do endulge the older one with both treats and
hugs and kisses and scratches and whatever it really likes the best.
Next: SMELL. Cats work on smells. Newcomer smells different. If push comes
to shelf, make them smell the same. First time around I bathed them. That
bonded Tiara and Shaddow, but made them ignore me for about a week he he:)
Second time around I was (I thought) smarter. I spread tuna brine all over
them. Again that helped them becuase now they all smelled the same, cleaned
each other, therefore spreading more of each other smell around and lived
happily ever after. On the negative side, the stink of tuna did make me open
windows for quite a few hours he he, so don;t do it in the winter he he! .
But hey if you wanna have a pet, you have to learn their language and
adjust.
Lastly: when they do meet, keep them both indoors untill they DO get along,
no metter how long. Otherwise, the older one might decided that her
territory is invaded and might look for alternative territory(which most
cats already have, and sometimes go up to 6 houses to be fed during the day!
Aren;t we humans gullible! )
As for you, relax, get a camera, and enjoy the fun moments. They go fast, so
snap them and keep them! Cats are fabulous!
Gee, Tiara, Shaddow, Tigger and Charlie
with QT in our hearts!

Cindy and Lucy are absolute terrors with each other. They leap, bound,
jump, stalk each other, aggressively wrestle, and bite with their ears
pinned back. Cindy will saunter around and arch her back before attack
mode. Sometimes one with make an "eep!" noise from the biting. They
literally fly across the family room at each other. These are littermates
that were always together since birth. Last night I could not believe what
I saw. Lucy jumped on top of the vinyl loveseat and was just sitting there
as motionless as a statue, except for her moving tail that went back and
forth like the pendulum of a clock. Cindy kept jumping and biting at Lucy's
tail. Lucy was sitting there and moving her tail intentionally because she
wanted Cindy to jump at her tail! This kept going on for a while.
I might add that as much as they fight, they also groom and care for each
other. When Cindy was sleepy and quiet after her vaccination, Lucy went up
to her and started licking her face and her ear, as if to ask her if she was
okay because she cared.

Well it all sounds to me like a perfect sisterly relationship! :) All that
fighting is only a game, and something they learned and carried on from
early age. My Tigger ansd Charlie also like to play pretty ruff, and at
first I thought Charlie is hurting Tigger, as he pins him down and bites
him, but then when I save Tigger and take him elsewhere he just runs back
calling Charlie to continue the game! It's all a game to them, no metter how
rudd it seems to us. Dogs play like that as well.
