It seems people pay 500-600 dollars for cats of purebreed, so if I get two
purebreed cats and sell 3 kittens thats 1500 bucks for no real work.

anyone doing this at home I have a few breeds I plan on raising in my
backyard to sell off. how do I sell these kittens?

oh back yard breeders :-(

Most people want purebreds that come from lines with recent Grand Champions
in it. To do that the breeder must show them. That is a lot of work and
money, taking the cats around the state, or greater area, to get them enough
points to be a Grand Champion

What, you mean other than the cost and effort of showing the
cats to Champion or higher levels?  Other than the cost and effort of
doing the breed-appropriate genetic testing?  Other than the cost and
effort of matching 5-generation pedigrees?  Other than the cost and
effort of proper pre- and post-natal vet care?  Other than the hard
work of properly socialising the kittens?  Other than the cost and
effort of getting a lawyer to help you draw up an enforcable sales
contract that spells out your responsibility and the new owner's
responsibility, including right of first refusal clauses, indoors-only
clauses, genetic health guarantees, and possibly no-declaw clauses?
Where exactly is the no real work here?  People don't pay that
kind of money for cats that do not have that amount of time and effort
behind them.  That's why very very few breeders break even, much less
make a profit.

    You can't.

ohhhh Orchid if only all breeders where like you :-)    and what you said
above is only half of what is involved, you had not even started to mention
special diets for Queen and kittens, emergency vets, always in the middle of
the night! ceaserian births, special heating,  kittening box,  feeding
syringes, hours of time grooming, cuddling, checking, and so on

that's why I get so mad at people who automatically put breeders down!

people like Orchid has proved over and over again not all breeders are bad!

I have recently bred my first litter of kittens,  now nearly 4 weeks old,
starting from the cost of the Queen and looking into her family lines,
finding the right stud and fees, blood test before the mating, and including
everything I have paid out so far and need to pay out,  I will not be making
any money out of it, due to all the things required to breed healthy, happy
kittens!  I knew I would not be making much money out of it,  but I have 6
beautiful kittens, and made friends with 4 wonderful to-be owners,  and
really enjoyed the experience. I have learnt so much from this.

You spend hours going through emails and phone calls of time wasters and
people who you would not let them have one of your toy cats, let alone one
of your babies!

Talk about wasting time -- counting other people's posts.  Can't you
do something else for a hobby?
Posting is probably relaxation for her between her other work.  MLB
