Taking pills

I'm sure this has been asked before but what's the best way to get a cat
to take a pill? I've had cats on and off for years but they never seemed
to need worming. Now I've got another one and want to ensure that he
doesn't get worms. So I've started to worm him every 8 weeks. But I fell
at the first fence. Cat won't eat the pill even if crushed up with food.

Any patent methods, anyone?

There are as many answers to this question as there are cats..! Every
one is different and what works for me may not work for you.

However, the easiest way I've found is to conceal the pill in a
favourite treat, ideally something soft. Here in the UK there is a brand
called "Webbox" which consist of a stick approx. 6 inches long which you
break off into pieces and feed to your cat. You can lay them in front of
her, or feed them directly by hand, my Missy attempts to grab them from
my hand as I'm breaking them off the stick, I don't know what's in them
but I wish they'd put it in ordinary cat food ;-)

The above relies on the pill being small enough, but it works for me. I
believe that there are specially made treats called (ISTR) "Pill
Pockets" or something similar, but when I checked they weren't available
in the UK.

Hope this helps,

Ivor

Thanks Ivor. I'll obviously have to feel my way on this one!

*They are called Feline Tab Pockets, and are produced by Waltham.

I bought a syringe-like thing from the vet for under two quid - the
'Buster Pill Giver'. You stick the pill in one end, shove it in the
cat's mouth and depress the plunger, whereupon the pill is projected
down the cat's throat. You still have to hold the beast down and open
its mouth, but it's better than chucking the pill in and hoping it's
swallowed.

Hi Rob,

It would be useful to know how you're attempting to feed the pill, and then
what goes wrong.

My wife has been crumbling up a pill in one of our cats roasted chicken and
sprinkling it throughout his food with good results.....I suppose this would
only work if the pill didn't taste too bad, so the cat didn't mind it. But
it seems to work with our "Smokey".

On speaking with my wife further on this matter, she says, "Cats don't chew.
They tear off hunks of meat, and swallow them whole. So, if you Cut the meat
up into small chunks, they will just swallow them whole without biting into
them. Now, if you break up the pill into very small pieces, and carefully
insert a piece of pill into the center of each piece of meat, you can get
the cat to swallow the small piece of meat with the smaller piece of pill
inside it, whole and he won't know the difference. This works especially
well with roast chicken."
Sounds like a lot of trouble to me, but if you only have to do it once
every 8 weeks........
