Hi

My 13 year old female cat has a urinary tract infection.  The doctor wants me to
give her liquid anti biotics twice a day for 10 days.  Its been about 5 days and
I absolutely can't get her to open her mouth and take it.  If there is any
medicine on her mouth she wont even lick it off and swallow it.  Does anybody
have any advice on how to get this cats mouth open and give her the medicine?
She is a tough one.

Thanks for any help

Steve

We just went through the same thing a couple weeks ago. I found that taking the
syringe and applying to the corner of the mouth our kitty would open. I kept in
the back by the molars and just started easing it in at the rear of the tongue.
Supposedly the stuff we were using was tuna flavored. It didn't smell like tuna,
more like cherry. There were two medicines, one was the antibiotic (cherry
smelling one) and I don't remember what the other was as the bottles are long
gone. The syringes were small ones similar to insulin syringes.

When I have to give my cats liquid medicine, I put them up on the
counter and hold them firmly by the scruff tilting their head back
slightly so they can't struggle. This forces their mouth open enough
where I can get the syringe in and shoot the dose into their mouth.
Their first reaction is to swallow it. Their second reaction is to give
me a dirty look.

Okay, you may have tried this already, but this is my method (my cats
are quite easy though):

I sit on my knees on the ground.
I have the cat in between my legs, facing away from me.
You can use your legs to hold the cat in place, basically I sit on it
and squeeze my legs. (not with my full weight of course, just enough
for it to realize there's no escape)
With my left hand, I cup the chin, lifting it up.
With the fingers of my left hand,  I pinch the sides of its mouth,
forcing it open (not much force needed at all)
With my right hand I drop the meds right down its throat.

Good luck...

mix it in her food.. or give her a treat of meat flavored baby food (nothing
but meat and broth in it - check the ingrediences) and mix it in with that.

If you've got it in a syringe, try putting 3 clothes pins on the scruff of
their neck- it calms them down.  I've seen a vet or two have clothes pins
just for this purpose.  Next, slip the syringe into the corner of their
mouth and depress the plunger.  First reaction is to swallow, second is to
shred whatever clothes you're wearing (or your arms if you're wearing a
short sleeve shirt) and the third reaction would be to hide under the bed
next time you want to do this.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.  When my kitten Watson had his surgery,
he was given pills for his antibiotics.  At one point, after 2 or 3  days of
shoving these down his throat, I dropped one and he ate it.  I tried it
again the next time, just giving it to him like a treat.  He ate it that
time too.

This stuff smelled like Zithromax, which is bubble gum tasting.  Out of all
of my cats who have had antibios, Watson is the only one who will take it
willingly.

Of course, all my other cats have had "Aquadrops", which is the most foul
tasting stuff anywhere, so small wonder that they're not keen on anything
going near their mouths.

Thanks all for the advice.  I ended up calling the vet and they are having me
bring her in every other day for a shot instead.  Its $15 a shot but well worth
it in my mind.  At least I know she is getting the medicine.  I wish they would
have told me that option was available 6 days ago.

Thanks
