Inexpensive cat toys

All I do is take a few small scraps of paper and crinkle them up into
balls..
then throw them down the stairs,
My cat goes *running* like a devil.

Gives her all kinds of excercise and keeps her quite busy.

The other toy:
Just a stick with a string tied to the end.

I call it my cat-fishing pole <G>

A paper bag or a cardboard box are also inexpensive "cat toys" that can keep
them occupied for hours.

Those cheap laser pointers are fantastic (be careful not to actually shine
it AT the cat!). Both mine go totally crazy for it. The balls of paper also
work really well.

If you have enough room , a couple of reasonable size carboard boxes with
various holes and flaps cut in them will also amuse your cat for hours :-)

Some of my cats favor a piece of clothline with black tape wrapped around
the ends - they attack the tape.  Works with and without my assistance.

The all-time favorite cat toy for many years has been a rabbit's foot tied
to the end of a long piece of heavy twine: throw it out into the room and
pull it back - sort of like working a fishing lure.  Cats come out of the
woodwork to pounce on the rabbit's foot. When several of them are present,
they line up to make the rabbit's foot run the gauntlet.

Most of my cats have liked a ball made from aluminum paper (a chocolate
bar wrap will do). Cardboard boxes are also a hit. Liutik loves to
"kill" envelopes tearing them into confetti... And his most recent
favourite is a carton ring which rests when the toilet paper is used
with a lace passed through it and tied. He would take the end of the
lace in his mouth and drag the whole construction around.

Dexter the Wonder Cat likes that toy, but occasionally for a special
treat I got him a ping-pong ball.

The little plastic rings from the top of milk cartons have a magical
addictive power. They cry out, "Come smack me. Chase me. Knock me
under things and dig me out. I am the doorway to heaven for you."

I've heard stories about a friend's cat. Ollie cannot stop smacking,
sliding, or just staring at the little plastic ring.

LOL -- I had forgotten about those.

Dexter the Wonder Cat knew he wasn't allowed on the kitchen counter,
and I knew he got up there when I wasn't around.  When I opened a jug
of milk I used to leave the plastic ring there, and the next morning
it would mysteriously have migrated to another part of the house. He
would play with each one off and on for days, till it began to fall
to bits.

Good one!  Those plastic rings are cat magnets!  The only problem is my cat
always ends up knocking them under the furniture or something.  Then I'm
digging them out.....

LOL:

Well my cat is good at digging things out.
the other day when I got up I though she had killed a mouse in the kitchen.

It was a "dust bunny" she must have found beneath the refridgerator.

I spend a lot of time sealing up the old mouse holes in the back hall
and got worried for a minute <G>

10-4 on the milk rings, and the balls of paper--parchment (like the ones
from Danish cookies) are favorites at our house.  Also twist ties, water
bottle caps, tampons, and those little tiny super balls that come with the
toy jacks from the grocery store toy section. Then there are the cedar balls
with the grooves in them you put in your drawers.  They not only roll but
the make a rattling NOISE when they roll.

We keep back scratchers in most rooms to use to dig toys out from under the
furniture. We have a big china pot by the front entry where we put them and
the girls slowly dig them out all week.

I would be nervous of those, lest bits of wire get swallowed.

My Deetoo goes nuts over elastics and twist ties. The cheapest cat toy that
I can use with my cat is my dangling dental floss over her. She can't hook
it too well with a claw and it's too thin for her to hold on to with her
teeth, but she goes nuts trying.
