A New Way To Drink Water

My cat 'Ginger' has recently found a new way to drink water from her
bowl.  Instead of lowering her head and lapping up the water with her
tongue, she has decide it's better to dip her right front paw into the
water bowl and bring the paw up to her mouth and lap the water off her
paw.  It's similar to a person who would cup their hand, dip it into a
pool of water and bring it up to their mouth to drink.

Before now she was drinking water the way most cats would by lapping up
the water with their tongue.  I wonder if she will start eating her food
the same way.

Then you can get her a spork. :-)

Fred, my cat has recently discovered that drinking water from the tap is
much more fun and now he ignores his water bowl most of the time. He
also likes to "pick up" small pieces of cheese, butter or meat with his
claws (don't know if he's right- or left-pawed, must think of
remembering it next time). I usually tell him to stop mimicking me like
a monkey but he seems to like it.
Another cat who lives with my parents would put his paw into the water
bowl, splash half of the water around and only then drink... from the
bowl! We had a theory that he couldn't see the water but it was dropped
being too unscientific. I think it's just his way of drinking, a sort of
ritual we humans also have (like always putting on the right sock
first). Cats are full of mysteries :)

I have cats who go to the bathroom sink and wait for me to turn the faucet
on so they can drink from it. Then there's Feisty who wants water in small
(dixie)cups placed in the shower so he can tip them over and watch the water
run down the drain.

Have you offered her a knife and fork?  :-)

Seriously, I wonder if she may be having joint problems that make it
painful for her to bend down to the bowl. The paw technique is so
much less efficient than the tongue-lapping technique that I can't
imagine a cat adopting it without a compelling reason.

I had this idea, too, but then wondered if she had a bad or sensitive tooth
which made lapping cold water uncomfortable.  Licked from her paw, the water
would be nearer body temperature.   It's worth keeping an eye on her as, if
this is the case, she may soon find eating uncomfortable.

Cats are creatures of habit and it's often only when these habits change
that we begin to realise that there's a problem.

My Deetoo occasionally uses the paw in the water method for drinking. She's
only three years old so I doubt there's any paw problems. It may be just
another method for grooming like when she licks herself. It's probably
easier to use water that's already present than saliva for grooming.

Nightshade does this...especially when the water is running a bit low in the
bowl.

There is something about the magic of water that does make them nuts.
Maybe you saw this video about the cat who loves to flush?

I think that is why she starting doing this.  I came home one day and
the water in her bowl was very low.  I guess she figured that it was
easier to use her paw to get the water when it was so low.  Cats are
such smart creatures.

I've had cats before that ate and drank like that, albeit only
sometimes.

That isn't that rare of occurance.

I believe it to be a learned behavior of mimicing people...much like a
cat
might try to turn the doorknob on a door to open it.
