I have a 16 year old Tabby that about 8 weeks ago it's right eye
become dark purple and cloudy which happened quite quickly over day or
so.
His left eye is normal.
He was taken the next day to my noting the problem to the vets.
The vet gave a thorough examination of it's eye and no damage could be
seen.
The vet did not believe that it was a tumor as a tumor was normally
black.
A blood test was given which showed that although the blood was not in
perfect condition, it was only to be expected in such an old cat. The
blood test ruled out kidney problem which can give rise to blood clots
in the eyes.
Heart and lungs condition sounded fine when listened to with
stethascope.
I then took TC home with instruction to take him back if he showed
signs of suffering or being off his food or not drinking. (He had
seemed fine in himself and been eating, drinking normally)
The vet phoned me with the blood test result (as above) and asked if
he could have the blood tested for Leukemia and Feline Aids; which I
agreed to.
TC's eye seemed to get better by itself and got back nearly to normal.
I took TC back for a second visit to the vets as requested for a
further examination and nothing was found as to the possible cause of
the eye problem.
I was informed that the further blood tests proved negative and TC did
not have Leukemia or Aids.
I took TC home again hoping that the problem had resolved itself.
The problem came back 2 weeks later and this time the eye watered with
a bloody colour and he also at the same time developed a cold with a
runny nose. This time he was very sorry for himself and quite out of
sorts.
I took TC back to the vets a third time; this time seeing a different
vet. Further examination but again no answer to what the problem was.
This time I was given pills; antibiotics to clear up TC's cold and
pills for possible high blood pressure.
This course of treatment was given. (Try crushing pills up very finely
and mixing with canned tuna or salmon - it works)
The eye seemed again to get better over a couple of weeks.
But now TC's eye has gotten dark again.
Help anyone with any ideas as the vets (both seemed very knowledgable,
competent and caring) seem not to be able to help.
Having the eye removed might seem to be an answer but TC seems mostly
to be content in himself even though his sight must be impared. (It is
still functioning and the cornea undamaged) and, of course, he is old
and might not survive an operation.
I have 3 cats, all old but much loved.

I would try getting an appointment with a vet ophtalmologist (sp?) for a
better diagnosis.

If he were my cat I would leave well enough alone. Everything
eventually fails with age, but removing the eye would not make him
young again. Why put him through that misery? MLB
