I have an approximately 12 year old spayed female cat that I had since a
kitten.  I got the cat from a shelter, and it was practically starved as the
ribs were prominent.

She grew up with another cat that also gained alot of weight.  But now she
is by herself.

This cat is clearly overweight now and I have been restricting her food
intake.  She whines when I do this which is annoying(any ideas how to stop
the whining?)  Also when I go on trips I leave her an unlimited supply of
food and
and I have been doing a bit of traveling lately.  The cat
clearly gains weight when I go on a trip.

Is there anything I can do here?

try a food dispensor  and set it with a certian amount at certain times
during the day  before you go  it will train the furball

the whining part is something you have to deal with they are like a children
the more you enable them the more they want

did your vet tell you the cat is overweight? and tell you what diet to put
the furball on?

I have a cat that looks fat but he does not eat that much really.  The
vet said it is the way he is shaped.  It looks like parts of his
insides are hanging down.  He looks a bit lethargic at times, he don't
bother with hunting and takes a long time to slowly walk in when he is
called.

It might help to get her a companion.

I have an obese cat (he was that way when I got him), but he lives with a
clowder of mostly active cats, so he's active too.

Put it on a diet of food for overweight cats and / or talk to you vet.
They may suggest a food / diet for it.

Good luck.

Think about this: Tigger is one fo fifteen cats in the clowder.  Do you
have a method of feeding fifteen cats so that one of them gets a
restricted diet?  I can manage suppliments, but the logistics of feeding
that many cats who come and go at will pretty much resolves to a large
bowl of kibble available 24-7.

Yeah.....I have the same problem on a smaller scale.....I have 5 cats, and
we suspect that one of them might have the flv virus.....So we made sure all
the others have their booster shots. But how are we going to keep them from
all sharing the same food and water bowls? I thought of putting each one's
food in a separate box with a lockable door, and training them to eat out of
only their own box, at around the same time of day. Possible perhaps, but
kind of a pain in the a.s.....I don't know what I would do if I had 15 of
them........

I had an idea for supplemental feeding: a box a little wider than the bowl
with one end and the top open, but not enough room for more than one cat -
put the bowl at one end and let the cat have at it.  Currently, I have to
sit there by the bowl and shoo several persistent cats away time after
time.

That might work.....Right now, the cat we suspect is sick lives on the foot
of our bed, and we feed him there with his own bowl of food, which the other
cats won't touch anyway. He seems to be OK, but the vet says he might be a
"carrier" so it's best to not let him become too intimate with the other
cats. But trying to control their total food intake for general health
purposes would be very difficult, since they eat night and day out of what
is to them an infinite bowl of kibbles. It is also very convenient to go
away for a weekend and know the cats will be OK in our absence. This is hard
for us to do now that we think Smokey might be a viral risk to the other
cats, and it would be hard to do if you were trying to keep a bunch of cats
on a diet. One of the things I like about cats is their independence. They
are generally easy to keep. But trying to control their total food intake
kind of nullifies that feature.

My aunt has a  thats overweight and on a diet. She also has another cat that
is small and slender. Both are indoor cats. She got them both from me so I
know the overweight one didnt get that gene from his mother, she was a very
small and slender cat. I suggested to my aunt a toy that Sambo (the
overweight cat) can go after. Maybe somethin like a scratching post with one
of the bouncing toys on top. Or The cat I have now likes to just go after
string sometimes or almost anything. ok well good luck with your cat.
