my cat lets me carry him around my apt building hallways.  however, as
soon as I get near the elevator and hit the down button, he leaps out
of my arms and bolts away.  why is he afraid of getting on the
elevator?

Probably the noise of the elevator, the smell of the elevator,
the idea of being confined in the elevator.

And depending on the elevator the sudden movement, the jerkiness
of the elevator, and the crowd.

You ever seen what happens if an elevator drops to the floor.  A mans
ankles can end up getting pushed up his a.shole and out through the top
of his head !

Take him on the stairs.
