Getting cats to go to the toilet *outside*!

Hi,

Our adolescent cats Moomin and Fudge have been allowed to go outside for
about two or three weeks now, following their second set of
vaccinations. We've placed their litter tray near the cat flap, in the
vain hope that that might encourage them to go to the toilet outdoors.
It doesn't work--they always come back in to wee and poo (British words,
but I'm sure people living in other countries can work out their
meanings!).

We really want them to get into the habit of going to the toliet
exclusively outdoors. How do we do this?!

Many thanks,

Irish Murdoch

Hi, when we were training our cats, we actually put the litter tray
outside then moved it further away from the door gradually then after a
week removed it completely.

Regards,

Lee.

Why are u making your cats go outside even if it's just 2go2 the
bathroom? Aren't u afraid something may happen to them? I'm sorry but I
don't understand.

Until I moved to the city, I had outdoor/indoor cats all my life. Nothing
"bad" has ever happened to them, except when one was sprayed by a skunk
(curiousity may not have killed the cat, but it sure made him stinky).
Anyway, put the litter box outside, or, if you aren't too squeemish, take a
piece of kitty poo and show your cats to bury it outside.....they learn well
through example...lol. That is what worked best for me.

Thanks for that. Putting the litter tray outside seems to have worked.

And the cats won't even get sprayed by skunks--we don't have 'em in
Britain!

By the same token, I wouldn't understand why anyone would keep them
inside. Not the natural habitat of the cat is it, the human house? You
should see where we live. Acres and acres of nature reserve in an
official area of outstanding natural beauty. Now if we kept our cats
away from that, it *would* be cruel!
