A 26-year-old domestic cat from Shropshire
could be one of the oldest in the UK.
Pussywillow lives in Ratlinghope and is still
"sharp in her mind and her eyes", according
to owner Lin Brown.

The black cat, who now enjoys curling up by the
stove, lived off animals she caught herself until
she was 22, Ms Brown said.

Healthy cats can normally live to about 18, with
previous world record holders only reaching their
early 20s.

Pussywillow was near-feral when she was first
taken in by the family.

I wonder what happened with this cat?

BBC News
Feb. 22, 2005

A west Wales feline is laying claim to be being the
oldest living domestic cat in the world.
Amber was a fully grown stray when she took up
residence in Diane Sleeman's Ferryside home in 1978.

Diane thinks she is now approaching 30, which would
make her almost five years older than the current
record holder, according to Guinness World Records.

Researchers said if Diane can provide them with
evidence then they will consider Amber's claim.

Amber has lost most of her teeth now which makes it
hard for vets to get an accurate age.

But apart from that and the odd ache and pain she is
still as "fit as a fiddle".

Or this cat?

BBC News
July 11, 2001

The world's oldest cat has died, two months after celebrating
its 31st birthday.
Spike, a ginger and white tom, died in his owner's arms at
Bridport, Dorset.

The Guinness Book of Records confirmed Spike's claim to fame
after owner Mo Elkington took him to an astonished vet three
years ago.

Mrs Elkington attributed Spike's long life to the aloe vera gel she
had been putting in the cat food for 10 years.

She thought an irregular heartbeat might have helped.

When Spike turned 30, Mrs Elkington put up banners and
photographs on her stall at Bridport market.

Her pet still had a full set of teeth, went hunting and
"ate like a horse".

Fan mail arrived from around the world - including letters
addressed simply to Spike of Bridport and The Famous
Cat in Dorset.

My own personal experience of cat longevity is
of an old friend of mine who had a cat.

His cat Elvis died at about 23 years old.

One of the resident cats at the Cats Protection shelter where I volunteer
was at least 22 when he died about 2 or 3 years ago. One of the current
old ladies, Kitty O'Donnell, must be at least 20 but I'd wager she's a lot
older. The oldest cat there whose age was known for sure, was Peach, who
died shortly after being adopted at 19.

I've known several 17/18/19-yr olds, but none older than that recently. I
do have a newspaper clipping from 2004 of a cat reported to be 33, having
been owned by the same lady since a kitten. No idea if he's still going
though, good luck to him if he is..!

According to my calculations, that's about 103 in human years.  She
belongs on a jelly jar!

Oldest I've known was 22 (Siamese). She died on the table needing surgery
for an infection.  Not a bad life!

A 24 year old cat called Rosie just died and belonged to friends of
mine.  She was run over by a van years ago and a local guy was going to
take her head off to put her away quickly, however he paused and they
nursed her back to full health.  They tell me that it looked over for
Rosie at the time.

Have you ever thought about the extraordinary chances it takes for any
creature and humans to be born in the first place ?  Truly incredible.
