Hi, has anyone ever studied meow's, like, to see what your cat is saying?
the one that interests me most is the multi-pitch meow's, that go sorta
like: murr-EEE-owwww-EEEE-ooooo and such :) my cat does this sometimes
when I get home, I think he's happy to see me, or something. :)

I know someone with a cat that *talks*... while you're sitting on sofa
watching TV, he'll sit next to you, and start meowing in low tune.

We have one cat that has quite a vocabulary. His two favourites are kind of
a "meeeeeeeeeek" which he does when he wants millk and a miaow that kind of
sounds like hello. He definititely has the ability to communicate to a
degree.

A while ago I remember reading a post from a guy in Italy who claimed,
that after years of study, he was finally able to translate Cat
Language. The article seemed sincere. He had several pages of phrases
and words in cat meow-phonetics with their English translations.
It would have been alot more useful if there were sound clips instead
of the "meeee-owww' phonetics which are not useful for accurate human
reproduction.
When he puts out a course on tape, I'll buy it. Even though it will
probably drive my cats crazy.

A mechanical "bark translator" is available now with a feline "meow
translator" on the way. :-)

I've owned 3 cats in my lifetime, (one of them was mute and could only
produce a hoarse raspy sound as a meow) but every one of them has
different tones and sounds and certainly communicates in their own
way.
Sabrina has:
- Feed Me
- Hello, I missed you today, let me sniff your head to see where
you've been today.
- Pet me
- Wakeup and pet me
- No, scratch my head
- Don't pet me any more I just want to cuddle and sleep
- You've been away for too long and I'm going to bitch about it for
20 mins. (aka "snotty meow")
- Play with me
- Its me, I'm hiding under the bed, but I know you just came in the
room.
- "blow kisses"... the meow that she does after I blow kisses at her.
(aka, the talking back)
- I love you meow - the meow that is half purr, half meow.
I remember when I was married to my ex, he was in the Navy and out to
sea, and I had the mute cat. My neighbor stopped by to see how
things were (being alone and all) and offered to have me over if I
ever wanted company or anyone to talk to. Well, he jokingly
nicknamed me the psycho cat lady, because I just picked up my cat and
<jokingly> told him that if I wanted conversation, I would just talk
to my cat. He didn't believe me that Rascal, the mute kitty, could
talk back. So, I picked her up, and did the same raspy "baaackh"
sound she made for her meow, and she did the same thing right back to
me. (oh, she couldn't purr either - you could feel the motor, but no
sound),

Try Stephen Budanski's THE CHARACTER OF CATS, Pgs 107 to 114... (the
rest of the book is quite interesting, as is Desmond Morris' CATWATCHING.
The two most interesting cat books I have read since I decided to bring a
cat into my life...)
