Hi all,

In about two weeks I'll be welcoming my new furry friend to my home - my
first cat. With the 300 gazillion cat-dedicated web sites out there, I could
not find one devoted to: "The first 24 hours with your new cat" or the like.

Any helpful hints for me, guys? Like: What's the first thing I should do
when I open up the carrier?  How do I show him where the litterbox, his food
and water and the bed are? And so on...

FWIW, he's a purebred Persian, 10 months old, and will be just neutered
(I take him home after the breeder is certain that the surgery is OK). I'm
sure that he'll miss all of the other cats in the cattery and his former
human companions, and I'd like him to feel warm and welcome, so I'd
appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

When TuTu was brought to my home by the lady who oversaw the rescue
group, she was in a carrier as we talked.  Then I let her out to
explore at her own pace.  After a while I picked her up and took her
to the bathroom where her pan was and placed her in it -- I took her
paw to show her the scratching motion.  She then wandered back to the
living room.  In about 1/2 hour I saw her walk to the bathroom where
she used the pan --quick learner.  She was  about six months old at
that time.

She had been found as a young kitten wandering and starved on a very
busy street.  She was taken in by a rescue group, neutered and given
shots and had been living in a cage for quite some time      I
provided several "beds" for her and let her choose whichever she
wanted.  She tried them all.  Her favorite place is with me.

Good luck.    MLB.

One of the best websites out there is Max's site:

Everything you need to know about cats is there. Good luck with your new
friend! Make sure you show your cat the litterbox right away, at 10 months
old he should know what it's for with no problems.
