Hi all,
I just adopted a 4 year old cat, most adorable thing ever. Her
previous owner had her since she was a kitten but his kids were moving
out and four cats were too much to handle.
I got her yesterday (7pm) and besides scouting the place for a short
while, she has remained under the bed most of the time. She was
meowing and crying all night, albeit due to missing her old owner and
home.
What I'm worried about is that she hasn't touched any food since
coming here and I'm wondering how long can a cat go without food
before I should be concerned?
Will she ever get over it or is such a move at her age too traumatic
and I should return her?

PATIENCE YOU NEED PATIENCE
Leave the food and water where the furball can get it. Close the area of
and leave the furball alone for a bit. This is where patience is a virtue.
It takes time to integrate the furball into your home
Think of them as a child you just took it from another home and basically
no pun intend tossed it into a unfamiliar environment
A cat can survive a couple days without food but not with out water

Alright but my apt is a one room apt. No way to close it off. Will
that be a problem?

No loud noise no quick movements no unexpected visitors for the next few
days
If she comes out don't bother her let her explore on her own. Which she
will do will you are gone
Make sure the litter box is not near her food or water. Leave both wet and
dry food out for her and plenty of water.
If you can get some cat treats put them in front of the furball talking
softly and reassuring to her.
It will take time
Ps welcome to slavehood and Thank you

Well, I hate to disagree, but my friends cat was missing for two weeks, and
he found it locked in the trunk of one of his cars.....Other than the fact
that it hit the water and food bowl pretty hard, it survived fine.......They
are amazingly able to go for long periods without food and water......

She'll get over it, but you should give her lots of lap time and attention
to allay her fears as much as possible. She will eat and drink when she gets
hungry and thirsty enough.....We got an 8 year old a couple of years ago
when her mistress died....She spent a lot of time in the basement with me
(computing), but after a month or two she started exploring the rest of the
house, and now she is the general yardmaster of all of our cats....(We call
her, "Cat Ratchet")

I know you are right about them surving a long time without food or water.
I just meant after a few days is when it is time to start to worry for a cat
that is used to having regular food at regular times:-)

Yes....Cats are curious, and I am always worried that one of mine will jump
in someone's car trunk and get shipped to Timbuktu or somewhere....There was
a Bay area Cat that ended up in Seattle a few years back.....Fortunately, he
was wearing a collar, and got returned to his home by the travelers.....
