A little over 2 months ago we inherited a couple adult cats from my late
grandma.  They have been getting used to the new surroundings very well.
They used to be indoor cats (san fransisco) but now they have a big backyard
to chase bird and squirrels and bugs, and they love it.  The problem is that
in the last week they have stopped using the litter boxes and instead are
doing their thing outside in a dirt patch.  These are the same litter boxes
they used all their lives.  Any advice on how to encourage them to go back
to the litter box?

Try taking some dirt from the dirt patch outside and put it in their litter
box. In the beginning, you might have to use substantially more outside dirt
in the litter box and then gradually lower the level while replacing it with
the regular cat litter they've always used.

BTW, the dirt patch outside that's being used, what is its normal function?

Ok, just wondering. Guess it can't be left as an outside litter box.
