kitten's life in the balance

Pudgy, our favorite of five kittens a month old now, got squished by
the refrigerator door closing today. He did not get up or open his
eyes but kept breathing. We took him to the vet about five hours ago.
About three hours ago the vet said there was some improvement in
muscle tone and suggested the kitten stay overnight. I'll be calling
again in about fifteen hours to see how Pudgy is doing. I asked the
vet straight up if he honestly thought Pudgy will make it. He says the
kitten has a good chance. He didn't feel any looseness of  the bones
so he thinks it is a pinched spinal cord and kittens are resilient.

Please pray or meditate or send positive thoughts for Pudgy, and for
us, and for Pudgy's brothers and sister and mother. I don't know for
sure how powerful positive thoughts can be to influence events, but
reality is pretty bizarre when you think about it, and it makes sense
that thoughts are things so who knows.

Please pray for Pudgy. Tonight he is in the hospital instead of
playing at home with his siblings, and we don't know if he is going to
live or be paralyzed or what. He is our favorite kitten too, being the
first to do everything and also the friendliest and cutest. Please
pray for Pudgy.

I just called the vet. He says Pudgy is moving more but not a lot and
vocalizing, and that it is good improvement for twelve hours. I am to
call back in six hours. They gave him fluids last night and will feed
him today. Please continue praying for Pudgy. thanks

I know this was an accident, but everyone should be aware
that kittens are very delicate, and extra care should be taken
if they own any.

My thoughts are for the best for Pudgy.

We are very careful. Kittens can quickly move places where they
shouldn't go even as a door is closing. Thanks everyone for their
support for Pudgy. It is four hours still until I call the vet to find
out if there's been any improvement overnight.

Yes I believe you are...it was meant more as a PSA to those who
may be forgetful.

Best wishes for Pudgy.

Isis once conked her head on some wooden steps she was playing on. There
must have been some swelling because she had a few epileptic episodes that
day. The next day she was fine. She bounced back. If Pudgy didn't break any
bones I'm betting she'll bounce back, too!

I'm sorry to say that Pudgy is gone. He had shown improvement
overnight. This morning he moved some, vocalized and took some food.
This afternoon his brain swelled. When we saw him about three hours
ago, he was in a bad way. Tremors, unresponsive, and obviously in
pain. He was put down. We showed the body to his mother but not to his
siblings. Luna walked up, sniffed him, gave him one lick, then stepped
away, rubbing her head on the box we carried him in. I just finished
burying him.

Thank you all for your support.

I am so sorry to hear about Pudgy. I can sympathize with you. Calvin was
only about 8 wks old when he a boy who should had been more careful dropped
a formica board and Calvin was under it. He suffered brain damage, had
seizures and died a couple weeks later. I cried for weeks blaming
myself...Still do at times even tho it's been 4 yrs this month. We have him
buried in our back yard.
A healing hug for you!

It was one of the worst things I ever saw to see Pudgy holding his paw
to the side of his head and complaining. He wasn't responsive...the
vet put his fingers in front of Pudgy's eyes with no reaction. He held
Pudgy's paw and no reaction. But Pudgy obviously felt the pain from
his brain being swollen. it was awful to witness.

I feel really bad we didn't have him put down the night before, but
the vet said he had a chance to recover and the next morning the news
was he showed improvement. I wouldn't have put Pudgy through any pain
if I could have helped it. I am so sorry. This is one of the worst
things I've ever seen, right up there with my mom and dad on their
deathbeds with all the tubes and wires stuck into them, machines
buzzing and clicking, etc. Right up there with the airplanes that
collided over my head at the start of an air race in 1994.

Thanks for writing again Barbara. I sympathize with you about Calvin.
Thank you for your kind words. What made it rougher for us is we
thought he was getting better most of the time he was at the vet. When
I called that last time, I was expecting news of further improvement.
The staff at the animal hospital were very sad about it too. They were
all pulling for Pudgy to make it. We got Pudgy to the hospital within
twenty minutes of the accident, but the damage had been done. In a
split second, everything changed. Please appreciate those you love
right now, because now is all you have, ever.

Oh, my.  I came in on this belatedly, and so did not have the chance to
wish him, to wish you all, well.  I wish it now, in spite of this
extremely sad turn of events.  May he be at rest.

You gave him a chance.

Comrades of our past were they,
Of that unreturning day.
Changed and aging, they and we
Dwelt, it seemed, in sympathy.
Alway from their presence broke
Somewhat which remembrance woke
Of the loved, the lost, the young--
Yet they died, and died unsung....

Fare thee well, companion dear!
Fare for ever well, nor fear,
Tiny though thou art, to stray
Down the uncompanion'd way!
We without thee, little friend,
Many years have not to spend;
What are left, will hardly be
Better than we spent with thee.

--Matthew Arnold

===========================

Why does he still whisper to me,
Sleeping beneath the snow?
Only a kitten, the friend of a child,
So long ago.
Happy we were, sharing delight,
Days were serene and good,
But then he died and I couldn't change that,
Cry as I would.

Kindly old tree, shelter him still,
We could not hope to stay
Always a kitten and always a child,
Always to play.

--Heather O'Dare

===========================

Is Heaven all you asked of it,
O little cat? Did Peter fit
A halo for your graceless head?
Is there a quilt for your special bed,
And a bowl of cream just out of reach
Of your thieving paw? Or do They teach
You not to steal in paradise?
Does the flapping of Their wings entice?
Do you scamper and swing on a golden fence,
Or are They teaching you reverence?
And are there really golden thrones
Up there? Or do the Mighty Ones
Have nice fat chairs that you can claw
And tear and snag with an impious paw?
And do the angels understand
That a little cat in a lonely land
Still longs for a kiss and a friendly cuff?

Celestial joys are not enough.
Please, some small saint in shining white,
Hold him close in your arms tonight.

I am so sorry to hear about Pudgy, I have only come across this website today
as my cat 'Donny' died on Saturday so I am feeling very low as you will be.
He was only 5 and came out of the blue.
I have posted about him in Health and behaviour titled Sudden Cat Death.
Cats are great and I have always had them.  We have only got one cat now and
at the beginning of the year we had 3.
I got Donny from being a kitten, he was known as a lion as he was really
fluffy and looked like he had a maine.
To Pudgy and Donny R.I.P

best wishes

My condolences to you, Clare, and thank you. I'm glad Donny had a
person such as you in his life.

I wouldn't have it any other way, I was brought up on a small farm with lots
of animals.
I will tell you a tale that will make you smile....Back in the mid 80's we
had a cat called Kitty who was pregnant and where should she give birth, but
in my bed whilst I was asleep.  I have bonded with cats ever since, she had 3
kittens Tommy, Susie and Fluffy.
My Dad used to call fluffy 'flingersnot' as when she got older she had a
runny nose and she sneezed a lot.
She had a good life...
I have also had a black cat called Jordan when I lived with my parents, who
sadly passed away last year.
I also had Rocco and Rosie...well Rosie we thought was a girl but discovered
she was a he....so he became Rosieboy :-)
Hence Rocco is part of my username....
I used to have a goat called Rupert, he was great.  he had a right character..
.A cockerel called chucky who had a limp, he too was great.
The only cat left at my parents is Rosieboy, we are both down to one cat :-(
Hope you liked this tale and yes we would never ever hurt an animal.
I was always the one that wanted to keep the strays!!!
My parents have 2 dogs called Max and Angel who were beaten so my Mum took
them in and they mean the world to her coz she does not like cruelty to
animals either...
To abscent friends and here is to the future pets that we have....
