New Cat

We just got a new cat...a 5 month old (or so) female that was abandoned.
Though still a bit shy...she seems happy and healthy but a bit shy.

Anyway ...we showed her the litter box in the basement and she has been
using it just fine for urination...

However for defecation she insists on "going" in the corner of my study.
Since she always "goes" in the same place...I decided to put her litter box
there...then little by little start moving it down into the basement .

Well the first night...she went in it just fine...So I decided to just move
it a small distance at first...(just a couple of feet).

Today my fiance called me at work to tell me the cat was trying to push the
box back into the corner !!!!!

She decided that she better put it back there for now...
and maybe in a few days try to move it again.

Anyway I thought there would be a few here who would get a laugh from
this...

but if anyone has any better suggestions I'd be willing to listen!

Thanks

You are doing it right. Just go slow. Let her use it in her corner for a
couple of weeks.....Then, when she has associated with the box rather that
the place, you will be able to get away with moving it slowly toward your
preferred location.......

OK I will not try to rush things.  Cat's are so amazing...and no two are at
all alike it seems!

Yeah....And they are very conservative. You can't rush a cat......You can't
even hurry it up a little...:^)

FWIW...

Your study is quite and easier to get to, that's why she's going there
instead.
Keep the door to the study closed, or try replacing the box
with her bowl of food.
She won't poop where she eats.

Cats have the same real-estate priorities as people: location,
location, location.
They don't want the litter box anywhere near where they eat,
they want it in a quiet area and they don't want to be interrupted.
Place it in a room away from the food bowl with easy access
and few interruptions. Make sure it's where no dogs or people
are running in and out, no dryer buzzers are going off.
Ideally, put it in a place near an escape, such as a door or a
tall cat tree, so if something does scare them, they can exit.

Hey I made good progress...the box has been moved a few feet closer to the
basement...

Every few days I'll move it just a bit more...

anyway she's earning her keep now...tracking down an eating insects in the
house!

I have one (Junie) that loves to do that......Junie, the killer of
moths.....She wakes us up leaping on the bed going after a moth in the
middle of the night....:^)

That's one good cat...I know it may be silly but I hate the way moths
flitter ...
I like a cat that can get rid of them...
and of course the mice too!!!!

Without a cat around...this house would fill up with mice~

Also  did you really clean the area that the furball used.  If there is
carpet or wood it got down into the floor below
use a black light to tell if you can.  there are products at he local pet
store to help out

And yes slavehood is wonderful you just wonder what is next and how can I
stay one step ahead of them ;-)

Some cats are like yours ain't it wonderful

Well she seems to be learning pretty fast...
she is now using the litter box that's in the basement *most* of the time...
and only using the one upstairs occasionally...

I may be able to soon do without it

You've obviously never met my Missy..! Until she arrived, we never *had*
mice, now she brings them in and looses them in the kitchen, causing us
(well me, really) to spend ages running around trying to catch them..!

Aaaarrrggggggghhhhhhh......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, our old cat that died was too old to catch mice...
he was missing his fangs.

The worst part was that the mice were eating the cat food!

Well, our other cats catch mice.....Unfortunately, they catch them outside,
and bring them inside!
