I'm bringing kitty onboard on a NY to CA flight next week.  Will JFK
make me run kitty through the  xray machine with all the other
carryone luggage?  If so, is it safe?

Decidedly not! I doubt seriously if any airline would do such a
thing.....The hard x-rays used to see bomb-like devices packed inside
luggage (some of which is metal) would be deadly to any living
organism........

Oh....I see that you are talking about carry-on luggage....That's different.
that machine only looks for metal. I'm sure that they will let you just take
your kitty out and show her to them, or not x-ray her at all.....Don't put
any metal on her, like a collar tag for example.....Make up a plastic tag,
and use a plastic/cloth collar.......

They will ask you to take your cat out of the carrier and hold it in your
arms while you walk through the security machine.  It's a good idea to have
a collar or harness on your cat with an ID tag.  I even took the time to put
a leash on mine just in case he freaked out.  He didn't, but with all the
noise and people in airports you never know.  I then removed the leash after
placing him back in the carrier.
