My Cat Tom who has been neutered will never stay indoors he wants to go
out doors All the time despite getting a lot of attention from me and
great food too.

How far is it normal for cats to travel distance wise when they are out
hes been gone in some cases 24hours.?

A cat's usual home territory is an area of one square mile. That would
be a circle with the center at your house and a radius of about three
city blocks in any given direction. This holds true even for altered
cats. Its hunting territory extends beyond that.

Once a cat gets used to the outdoors, it can spend a lot of time
prowling its territory. Sometimes, when spring hits, the urge to patrol
the area for long periods gets stronger. Since Tom probably shares at
least part of his home territory with other cats, check to see if he
brings home any scratches or wounds. (Cats would rather not fight, but
they will if they must.) If so, have him checked out by the vet to make
sure he hasn't caught any diseases.

I've had neutered males who, at this time of year, would stay out for
three or four days before returning home. There's something about spring
that brings out the call of the wild in cats, I guess.

Noon Cat is right about that.
I'd add one more bit, sometimes they even have second families they go
to
and stay away for days.

I'm not convinced it's purely about hunting though, it's just as much
about
being the dominate cat and being master of all he surveys, neutered or
not.

Personally, I like females cats better, they don't fight as much and
generally
don't go on long surveys far from home.

Usually only 2 or 3 blocks away....Mine has found a hot tub whose cover he
likes to sleep on. It is around two blocks away......But he loves my roasted
chicken, and always comes home to eat.....:^)
