I had the same experience. For years doctors told me "the cat should
go"
routine.
I always had a steadfast "no" in reply.
I would rather treat the problem than the symtom, so I took allergy
shots for
many years, and haven't had much of a problem since I stopped.
People should be aware that there are some things you can do besides
that;
1. wash your hands after touching a cat
2. don't touch your eyes or nose before you wash your hands
3. certain breeds (and even colors) of cats are less prone to create
allergic
reactions to begin with.
4. vaccum cleaners with HEPA filters to help keep dander in check
5. partioning the household so kitty can't go everywhere
But what does a doctor know?
The doctor thinks you will never, and should never be around a cat.
In that case, you will always be allergic to them instead of making
your immune system resistant the way it should be.

If you have to find a new home;
1. put an ad in the paper
2. talk to friends and neighbors
3. follow Matthews advice
Until then, kitty should have a house built for her outside so she
knows
to stay close by and won't feel abandoned.

Out feral cat lived in a cat carrier outside our bedroom door for a year or
so, until he became comfortable with sleeping in the house. I bought a
water-resistant heating pad, and put it on "low" and put it in the base of
the carrier, with a blanket over it. I put his food outside the opening, so
he would feel the warmth emanating from it while he ate and drank.....It
wasn't long before he was sleeping in it.
