Does she want something when she rolls on her back?

My cat often rolls on her back on the sidewalk.  She often does that
when I get out of the car.  I assume she's just glad to see me.  Is she
expecting a treat or something?

When my cat rolls on her back and looks at me upside down, I know she wants
to play.

She's waiting for you to tickle her belly, so she can grab you with her
sharp claws and tear your hands to shreds ;-)

She is very nice.  I don't think she ever used her claws on me.  OTOH
when she licks me she often bites me hard enough that I yell at her.

Hi James,

A cat rolls on its back for two reasons.  In this case, your cat is showing
you absolute trust and affection; she's obviously pleased to see you home.
Return her affection by giving her lots of fuss and - yes - treats if that's
part of your fussing her.

The other reason a cat rolls on its back is to free up and expose all its
weaponry in preparation for a fight.  Although a prone cat may *look*
vulnerable, it has the use of five weapons (four sets of claws and its
bite).  Its opponent, fighting from an upright position, is sitting on two
of its weapons .. it may also have to put its weight on one front paw to
gain a good fighting proximity .. that only leaves one set of claws and its
bite.  Not good odds.

Now that you understand the second reason, doesn't it make you appreciate
the first reason even more?!
