We took our cat to the vet for shots today (cat 1.5 year old). Vet and
her assistant made a very strong pitch on Revolution product. The way
they talked made me a bit suspicious as it sounded like a scare tactics
to sell the profitable product.
I would like to get some opinions here, given that our cat lives
indoors.

My cats are also indoor cats, and I rarely need anything for fleas.  By
"rarely," I mean possibly once every few years.  I do not use flea products
unless my cats actually have fleas (not a preventative since it is so
unusual for them to have fleas, and they have never had ticks).  On the rare
occasion when fleas have apparently been transported into the house, I
prefer Advantage (also available from your vet).

We have 7 indoor-only cats who have access to an enclosed cat porch.
We've used Revolution ever since it came on sale. We like it because it
protects not only against fleas, but also heartworm (a problem here in
Texas), hookworm and roundworm. I think ticks too, though we don't have
those around... :)
We order the large dog size and split it among the felines to achieve
the dosage in the regular cat version. Saves us a ton of money from
petscriptions.com (no affiliation with them, just a happy customer).

Perhaps Revolution is an exception, but here in the UK cat & dog flea
treatments are not interchangeable - they're totally different formulations
(even if the brand name is the same) - and I'm told can be dangerous if
applied to the wrong animal?

At the Cats Protection shelter where I volunteer, we use Stronghold
(chemical constituent Selamectin), which is a similar spot-on preparation
that deals with fleas, roundworm, ear mites, lice, hookworm, etc., in fact
most things except tapeworm.

From the product description sheet
(http://www.emea.eu.int/vetdocs/PDFs/EPAR/stronghold/V-050-PI-en.pdf) -

:INDICATION(S)

:Cats and dogs:

:Treatment and prevention of flea infestations
:Prevention of heartworm disease
:Treatment of ear mites (Otodectes cynotis).

:Cats:

:Treatment of biting lice infestations (Felicola subrostratus)
:Treatment of adult roundworms (Toxocara cati)
:Treatment of adult intestinal hookworms (Ancylostoma tubaeforme).

:Dogs:

:Treatment of biting lice infestations (Trichodectes canis)
:Treatment of sarcoptic mange (caused by Sarcoptes. scabiei).
:Treatment of adult intestinal roundworms (Toxocara canis)

Quite versatile..!
