A Small Victory for Me!

I can't claim many victories with Isis but one thing I have figured out is
how to have quiet mornings. The key is food.

First, I have to keep a close eye on how much she eats all day long. I have
to gauge that closely. Then, at night, I leave her enough dry food in the
bowl to satisfy her nighttime munchies. But, not too much . . . that's where
the art of this comes in.

When she gets up, the FIRST thing I do is open a can of warm fresh off the
shelf never been refrigerated fish or chicken flavor. I give her almost half
a can even before I have my own coffee ready. Numero uno.

She packs it in, baby. She packs in that whole bowl of food and wham! She's
down for the count. She can barely make it to the living room without
flopping down for the KO punch. From there on in the rest of the day is
downhill. She's either busy having a sunbath under the lamp or baking on the
radiator.

Failure to follow any of the above steps results in the Ugly Times of
Morning. And they are ugly. She's antsy, fidgety, crabby, noisy, and just
plain ornery. But I got it figured out and I'm pretty darn pleased with
myself!

Just make sure you don't give her diabetes by overfeeding her.

Pets (and people) get diabetes from sugar and the inability of the pancreas
to process that intake of  sugar. Most (but not all) foods have some form of
sugar or caloric content in them. Agreed, it's more difficult for an animal
to get diabetes from pet food, but it's still possible especially with
overweight pets and the difficulty the animal's body has processing an
excess amount of food. Most cats are pretty good with it comes to regulating
their food intake, but some eat more than they need to maintain a healthy
body weight which makes them susceptible to other diseases like diabetes.

----------
FWIW, the only thing I was feeding 15-year-old my cat (Alex) was dry Weight
Control Iams, he was only slightly overweight (one or two pounds) and he
still got diabetes. He was cured (yes, cured!) of the diabetes with Lantus
(glargine) insulin. (I had to inject him twice a day and check his blood
sugars with a glucometer). then, one day, his blood glucose went down to 49,
and that was the last time I gave him insulin. The vet told me that some
cats will actually be cured of diabetes from the insulin if caught and
treated early enough with Lantus insulin. My cat was one of the lucky ones.
Other cats do need to stay on insulin indefinitely. I also had to make diet
changes. The vet told me that he should eat Purina OM (overweight managment)
only (both dry and canned), which is a prescription food. She was satisfied
with his weight even at the time of diagnosis (which was one or two pounds
overweight) because as she put it "at his age, there are too many diseases
he can get that can cause a lot of weight loss." He wouldn't eat the OM
canned, so I have been buying either Friskies or store-brand "special diet"
canned (he gets a quarter can a day) plus I keep the bowl filled with the
dry OM, and he eats at will. He has been free from diabetes since last July.
Would he remain free from the diabetes if I now returned him to the Iams?
Couldn't say, but all I know is that it hasn't returned with the OM, so
there's no reason to take any chances. (I continue to check his blood
glucoses once a month and they are never above 85). FTR, supermarket dry cat
foods tend to be full of carbohydrates. Canned cat food has a lot fewer
carbohydrates. I'm not sure how the Iams Weight Control compares to the
Purina OM (in terms of carbohydrate content).
Best regards,

That must have you feel great. It would make me really happy to have cured a
pet from a debilitating disease. As you mentioned, you can't be sure that
the diabetes won't return, so I'd stick with the diet you're currently
giving your cat.

No problem there. She's been 6.5 pounds since Day #1. She has a built in
eat-o-mometer that turns off her appetite when she's full. My sister's
Cornish Rex is different. That cat is overweight. I can't get my sister to
cut back on his food.

I cannot avoid thinking that he should pass Isis on to someone who is
prepared to care for her properly and buy himself a stuffed toy cat for
his amusement.  He obviously doesn't want a cat with any personality of
its own.

geez, give the guy a break. is it so wrong for a pet owner to want a
little quiet time to him/her self?
it's not like he's doing it 24/7!

Why?  Give the cat a break, more like.

Not at all.  He can have that any time he is not around his pet.

> it's not like he's doing it 24/7!

There is no such thing as a part-time pet owner.  Choosing to own a pet is
a 24/7/365 commitment.  Period.

Cut it out, you guys.  If you'd been on here awhile and paid attention,
you would know that Mike treats Isis as the queen she believes herself
to be.  He also happens to have what is called a "sense of humor" (look
it up).

I'm sure he is big and ugly enough to speak for himself should he so wish
without needing someone like you to apologise for him.  When -- and only
when -- you have yourself developed a sense of humour you may presume to
lecture others.

Provincial!
(This is kinda fun, but a.p.c. being a topical NG, I'll desist now.  You
can have the last word, Nicolaas, if you care to.)

illusion of smug superiority in half a lifetime.

Ah, the "BWAAhahaha" response. Is that a word..? Whatever it is, it
totally destroys whatever credibility you ever had and brands you (if you
weren't already) a Class 1 troll.

<plonk>

(that means you're now in my killfile so don't bother to reply, I won't
see it)

PS does anyone in this group apart from me ever trim and snip..?

Hi, Diana.

I'm sorry I started this thread. <-: Personally, I just ignore the
hostile people on newsgroups. I don't understand the underlying dynamic. I
think it has something to do with anonymity.

Anyways, it's nice to hear from you. Her Majesty is fine. In fact, I
just got a few bucks ahead so my first order of business will be a trip to
the vet for M'Lady's Grooming. She's a long-haired Tabby so unless I
periodically get her a wash and wax I end up with little fluffy hair
thingies all over the house, which is what I have now. She's sleeping well
and has rediscovered the radiator covers in the house which, to a human,
would be intolerably hot but to her are just another road trip to Paradise.

Now that winter is creeping up I will be developing Her web page. It
will be chocked full o' photos and instructive movies that other cats can
watch and learn from!
