How Much Sack Time?

I would estimate that Isis sleeps about 22 hours a day. She does get up to
eat, of course, and we have some playtime during the day but I doubt that
eating and playtime consume more than 45 minutes so maybe she's closer to
spending 23 hours in the sack each day.

She can go right to sleep anywhere anytime. If I wake her because I feel
like scratching her ears when I'm done, BOOM, she's back catching zzzzz's.

Do any of you guys have cats that actually do something all day besides
sleep?

Thank you.

Mike cats sleep on an average of 18 hours a day  most is not real sleep but
an light relaxation phase  hence the name cat nap

The master do as they like when they like and we bend to their whims :-)

It is amazing, isn't it?  As Matthew said, a lot of it looks like the
"I'm only resting my eyes" thing.  Their ears are clearly awake during
these times.  But there is plenty of genuine sleep.  I've always
marveled at how their nervous systems allow them to both fall asleep so
quickly and to wake so quickly--especially to wake so quickly.  No
groggy period where they need their coffee or their shower before they
can carry on with business as usual.  I'm envious.

99% of the time we're fine here but mornings are bad. Very bad. I'm groggy
and groping for coffee and she is crabby. Isis is always crabby in the
morning. She's fussy and fidgety and noisy and funky and groggy and just a
pain. Morning is the very worst time of day to annoy me and she goes nuts.
Even if I give her fresh canned food out of the can, not that nasty day old
stuff from the fridge, even if I do that she still gripes and makes a
racket. Once we get past the Ugly Time things settle down and she starts her
day with a nice long sunbath/sleep.

22-23 hours per day?
That is excessive, but probably not unusual.

My Big Mama is unusual on the opposite end of the spectrum.
She barely gets in 4-6 hours of actual sleep per day, and sometimes not
even that much.
I have to pet and talk to her softly to get her to wind down and rest.
She does lay down alot without sleeping or closing her eyes though.
And she will sleep more when it's really cold out.
But in the summer, forget it, right before the sun comes up, she wants
outside and won't come back inside for any real length of time until
very late.
Most of the time, she just hangs out on my 2nd story deck,
ever-vigilantly watching the landscape. Plus she has her own food and
water, an outside comforter, and a house out there to go in for a cat
nap. So I guess she figures, why go inside when I have everything I
need outside?
I do make her come inside sometimes though, if it's harsh weather or if
another cat is
going to cause a fight with her.
The other day, 2 male cats were up here fussing at each other,
natureally I came to the door to chase them away with a cup of water
(as I always do)...just in time to see her running inside her outside
house to keep from getting involved.

You might think there is a problem but I've spent $$$$$ on annual cat
checkups and everything else and she's just fine. She likes sleep. It's her
hobby. She can spend hours doing a sunbath under the lamp. Now that winter's
here she's made a beeline for the radiator covers where she can bake at 350
degrees undisturbed.

Big Mama sounds interesting like she has an interest in living things and
scents and action. Plus she's an outside cat where the action is. There's
bugs and sounds and smells and fun stuff. I can't let Isis out where I live.

Yes, I understand many kitties can't go outside because it's just too
dangerous for them.

Big Mama loves to go outside. When I go near the door, she'll run to
the door to go out.
True, she loves watching things, like moths, spiders, birds, squirrels,
ground hogs, skunks, deer, raccoons, other cats and even people. But
she never goes near them, shes afraid of them.....she just likes to
watch them.
Much like some people who sit on their porch, watch the traffic go by
and make small talk.

95% of the time she spends outside is spent on the 2nd story deck where
she
has all her living necessities. She'll only leave the deck for her
bathroom dig or a short distance walk, run or tree scratch, with the
occassional visit to the neighbors when she sees them available for
petting exercises.

In the winter she'll stay inside 90% of the time, as it's just too cold
out most times.
In the fall and spring, her inside time is about 25-40%.
In the summer it's about 10%, with the occassional time spent in the
air conditioning to cool off.
If it's exceptionally cold out, she'll just make a bathroom run and
come right back inside.

I don't have a litter-box inside, and she let me know she wanted to go
outside to use the bathroom once. But I was SO tired that day, I
couldn't get up right away. So she used the bathroom inside to
pee...but she did it in the shower area...just where she should have.
I praised her for her good work, so she knows she did good.
Other than that one time, shes never went to the bathroom inside, ever.

Most times I leave it up to her to decide whether she goes out or comes
in, with exceptions of course.....I don't like being a full-time
doorman.

Where I live, it really is just about the closest thing a cat can have
to paradise as far as being able to go outside and roaming around
safely. All the neighbors know her. No roads or dangerous obsticles.
Only 1 overly-friendly protective dog that she slapped once to let him
know whos boss.
Other than that, she lives in paradise.

I grew up in the country so I sometimes wish I was back there. Big Mama has
it made. She gets to roll around in the grass whenever she feels like it.

Since Isis is an indoor cat there is a whole lot of psychology in my house.
We go through phases. For the last two days it's been the lap time phase.
She jumps up on my lap while I'm working, stays there for a while, and then
just goes away. It may be months before she gets into that routine again.

There's an ebb and flow of power in my house. Sometimes I am the boss and
sometimes power slips back to her. It is not a stable relationship; it's
very fluid like water flowing back and forth between two beakers.

We have some neighborhood cats who stroll around bold as brass and easy as
you please. I have one who sits on my front doorsteps. Isis becomes highly
agitated and territorial when she see them saunter around. There is street
traffic in my neighborhood and I couldn't possibly let her run around.
Besides, she prefers to play the Queen from safely inside these walls.

It's been a few weeks since I've given her a snootful of catnip. I think
maybe it's coming on time. I sprinkle it into her fur and put a bunch on the
carpeted floor. She has a few good sneezes, eats every bit of it, and then
rolls around in the stuff in a frenzied daze.
