Do you HAVE to wash your cat regularly or is it just recommended? Because I
heard that cats don't need to be washed since they clean themselves but
other people told me that you still need to wash your cat.

You should not wash cats.

Under normal circumstances, there is no need to wash a cat.
In all of the years I've had cats, I've only ever had to wash one of them
once after she rolled in some oil.

Do not mind me asking but were those people in the best state of physical
health, no fingers missing etc.
It is a thoroughly unpleasant business for cat and owner.
When I was younger and a lot more stupid than I am now I tried to bathe a
cat, never ever again will I be so stupid.

Its not a good idea, the washing machine gets too clogged with cat hair.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist.
We've never 'washed' our cats. They don't smell bad (like dogs often do),
and my cats do a good job of grooming themselves and one another. We do
brush them on a very regular basis and clip their nails as well. Other than
that, they are totally self cleaning (if only my house were self-cleaning
too).

Not if it's an indoor cat,
not if it's an outdoor shorthair cat
and only rarely if it's an outdoor longhair...though that can be
avoided
with regular grooming.
The only cat I would recommend giving a bath once in a blue
moon as a treat would be a Siamese....they absolutely love
water and swimming in most cases.

I thought tigers were the only cats that swim.

I'm not sure about the big cats, but in domestic cats,
Siamese are famous for their love of water and deep
water at that....they like real swimming, not just
puddling about.

Interesting.
I didn't know that.
(never had a Siamese.)

Out of 7 cats, 4 love to watch us while we shower...In fact, Feisty had the
nerve to step into the shower while the water was running!

Heheh, little Muezza.Glorio here is like that. He's a black
familiar, for sure. And when water is running anywhere in the
house, he's there within about five seconds. It's quite funny.
Now when I'm in the bathroom, he's there, hoping....so
I will turn on the tap just a trickle and he's in there like
a shot, continuing an ongoing series of experiments
trying to figure out how to get hold of the column of
water and bring it out to where he can play with it.
He's tried bringing it out with his paws, and then
tried sticking his head under the tap to bite the
column and bring it out, no go there....his ears
keep getting in the way, hahaha. It's so cute
to see him biting the column thinking it's a string
of funny-looking yarn. He's only four months old,
so he's on the steep part of his learning curve at
the moment. I'm busy stalking him with the
camera at the moment trying to get a good shot
of it for posterity.

Feisty is about 7 months. Whenever I am washing dishes, he is there behind
the sink watching my every move. One day he got too close and lost his
balance and landed head and front feet first into the soapy water. Thought
that would cure him...NO...got his composure and was back for more!

Haha, Muezza.Glorio did that once, fell plop right into the bathtub as
it was emptying...it only had about 3 or 4 inches of water in it, so he
kind of sploshed around for a bit and then jumped out. So unlike the
usual feline response of rebounding when the first paw hits bathtub,
in one fluid movement, they are sproinging out of the water before
you've even registered that they fell in!

I have never washed my cats but I had a friend who did. She
was deathly allergic to everything, including her cat Barney.
She'd wash him once a week to limit her exposure to his
allergens. IIRC, she'd put him in a pillowcase, tied up
around his neck so that only his head was exposed, and wash
him through the material. Don't know why, as a flimsy
pillowcase certainly wouldn't protect her from his claws.
Cats look so pitiful when wet!
Doesn't Martha Stewart wash her cats?
I *think* it's a requirement that therapy pets be washed
before visiting hospitals, nursing homes, etc.

Heh. Neither of my Siamese would have stood for that! I did have
a tortie as a child who would accompany the dog and me on our
walks, and would wade in the creek, but never swim.

I do every few weeks. The thing is, she actually LIKES water. One day I
turned on the shower, left the room, and came back to find her IN the shower.
Also the cat shampoo I use helps reduce her shedding so much and softens up
her fur. Cat-bathing isn't for everyone though. When I had to give her a beth
when we first got her because she had fleas, she was yowling and clawed her
way onto my shoulders.
If you DO bathe your cat, what I do is let the water run on her for a few
minutes and make sure my hand is over her chest area and I shampoo her. This
keeps her from leaping out of the sink and making a mess.
=)
