What exactly does cat nip do, I have been told it works only with some cats,
is it available for sale (UK) I have this scratch pad that I was hoping to
cover in cat nip.  I have toys for my cats and my tomcat is nuts for this
mouse which contains catnip.

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a member of the mint family. Its "active
ingredient" is a chemical called nepetalactone. Google "catnip" for more
info than you'll ever need..! Here are a couple of links to get you
started:

Strangely enough, some cats don't react to it at all, my Missy is one of
them.

once heard that catnip to cats is like pot/grass/weed is to humans.

If your catnip does react to catnip you need to be very very careful during
his/her first one or two experiences. While your cat is going nutzo you may
want to pet her. This would be a mistake and could result in spilt blood. I
know this to be true.

Later, after your cat gets more used to it, you can safely approach or just
watch from a distance.

It's really easy to grow and self-seeds like mad.  My cats looooove the
fresh stuff--one of them will eat bunches of it if you let him.  A couple of
them are relatively indifferent but most go crazy over it.  You do need to
watch your fingers, they're that greedy about it!There are a couple of
outside ferals that do damage to the plants by rolling on them.
