Last Saturday my eleven-month-old cat started yelping whenever I picked her up. Then my husband discovered a lump on her abdomen, just below her ribs. I took her to the vet on Monday. He said it could be a simple bruise, gave me some pain medicine, and said I should call in three days with a report. On Thursday, kitty was still yelping (but not as loudly); vet said I should bring her in for x-ray, which happened today (Friday). After fearing the worst (cancer), I was told that one of the little bones on her sternum is protruding abnormally. On the x-ray it looks like it's split away from the rest of the rib cage, but still slightly attached (hard to tell). Vet said it could be congenital or it could have been caused by trauma. My guess is that this kitty banged herself a good one, since she is constantly running, leaping, and dive-bombing off furniture, steps, etc. The vet said that a cat this age could heal on her own in about six months; the other option is to have an orthopedic $$$urgeon fix the problem (with a pin or internal splint possibly?). Has anyone on the group had experience with this problem in a cat, and what did you do? I don't have the money for a surgeon.
