I have a 12 yr oLd maLe cat and the vet is checKing to see if this is
the reason for severeLy high caLcium LeveLs in his bLood .
He has Lost a tremendous amount of weight , is very Lethargic and has
become severeLy de-hydrated .
If this isn't the cause of the eLevated caLcium LeveLs then it couLd be
a cancer of the Lymph System .
Any information wouLd be appreciated !!!

You're kidding right? You pet is severely ill and you're here asking for
guesses on how to treat it?
Get your pet to the vet and while you're at it, find a more responsible
owner for it.

Hi Jamie, I found several links regarding hyperparathyroidism in cats.
Hope it helps. Bonnie

Hi Jamie:
I can tell you a few things, though your vet may have
already explained it to you, so forgive me if I am
being redundant.
If his calcium levels *are* due to hyperparathyroidism, then his
dehydration is due to large amounts of urine loss, because the
kidneys go into overdrive, trying to get rid of as much calcium
as possible, and water loss is inevitable. You may have to
encourage as much water drinking as possible, to prevent
more dehydration, at least while he is not treated yet.
Also, the kidneys tend to waste a lot of phosphate trying
to get rid of that calcium which means all his mineral
levels including sodium and potassium are out of balance.
Lethargy is a direct symptom of high calcium levels. And
slacker muscle tone is a part of that lethargy as well,
and loss of muscle bulk also, which is part of the
weight loss.
Well, anyways I thought it might help to explain some
of the symptoms. That website might give you
much more information than I can at this point.

My vet consuLted a speciaList today and when I got there the news wasn't
good .
IF it was this thyroid condition , he wouLd continuaLLy need to have
IV's to diLute his bLood because of the caLcium 0verLoad .
IF it wasn't this then he said it was either Lymphoma or intestionaL
cancer ... either way ... terminaL .
He said he wouLd continue to not eat and his kidneys were faiLing .
I couLdn't aLLow him to suffer , so , as hard as it was ... he was put
to sLeep .
I stayed with him , the vet put him to sLeep first and then gave him the
other shot .
He Let me stay with him for at Least a haLf hour after he was gone !!
It hurts my heart , but , I know it was the right choice for Tigger !!!

Jamie,
I'm so sorry--it's so hard to say goodbye but you did the best you could for
Tigger.

Oh I am so very sorry for your loss Jamie. It takes a lot of
courage to do the right thing when it hurts so much, but
you came through for your friend in the end.
Why don't you post here again, when you feel you
can, and tell us some nice stories about your cat?
We would love to hear them and remember him
with you.
